Description

The NGA Aeronautical Application (Aero App) is an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) mobile application developed by and for the DOD and FAA flight crews. The Application provides flight crews with the flight publications and data required to execute the unique mission of the U.S. War Fighter. Aero App increases situational awareness and improves safety of navigation by providing easy access to aeronautical information including Digital Aeronautical Flight Information File (DAFIF), Digital Flight Information Publications (D-FLIP) products, including Georeferenced Airport Diagrams and Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs), Arrival Procedures, Departure Procedures, Takeoff and Landing Minimums, Supplements, Airfield Qualification Program (AQP), Giant Reports, Electronic-Instrument Procedure Library and Host Nation Charts. Aero App is designed to enhance the use of aeronautical Flight Information Publication (FLIP) data and manage individual FLIP products.

As the world's authoritative source for aeronautical data, NGA is able to provide flight crews access to data on over 47,000 airfields worldwide via the application. In addition, the Aero App features an integrated E6B flight computer for flight planning on the ground and in the air calculations; a note pad; access to user documents and custom user maps. Connect to the internet, GPS or an ADS-B device to view traffic and weather information such as NOTAMs, METARs, TAFs, and Air Force weather. Overlay navigational data on the Moving Map such as Military Training Routes, Air Refueling Routes, Contract Fuel Locations, Terrain, Special Use Airspaces and much, much more.

Aero App is FREE and authorized for the following: US military, government agencies, Civil Air Patrol, foreign military partners and contractors flying missions in support of the DOD.

Great EKB. Highly recommend to all DOD aircrew. Frequent updates with an intuitive interface. I have been using this app for over 4 years and have had minimal issues. The “User Apps” feature has been incredibly useful when operating and planning in different countries that otherwise do not have readily available digital and georeferenced maps. Filing flight plans through the app is also very simple. A useful addition would be adding a feature that would depict flight level winds for the selected route of flight.

I have been using this app from many years and I highly recommend it to my students for their planning not only IFR/VFR but for tactical mission planning as well here at USAACE. The number 1 complain continues to be having to update the password, which with todays face recognition and fingers print access to keychain on IPads is truly not an issue at all. Airdrop/Sharing cycles with other users is fantastic. The DOD FLIP access and downloads within cycles has no match. The Aero App Data Server is a must. It allows the user ti take their experience to the next level; specially by using the Convert TIIF files into MBTTiles tool. Two recommendations: 1 Please bring satellite imagery back u ser the map selection tab. 2 Allow users to AirDrop/Share user flies such as MBTiles. The number two recommendation is particularly important when users create routes on Falcon View that can later one be converted into MBTiles for their tablets as a backup to a MFD failure.

Great in theory, keep improving

I really like the app, easy for planning and the TO Mins page is better than any app out there. CONS: drains battery and takes up a lot of memory. User interface can be difficult to learn. PROS: Only world-wide EFB that I know of. GREAT for planning! Love the dog houses and drag to drop function. It would be nice to load approaches similar to other apps. Also, the DS-B info is nicer on other Hilton Software Apps (Wing X Pro) it would be nice to see more cross-over….

Great start

As a new aviator this is a great start for free! Need to add the ability to Electronically file IFR flight plans and to add approaches to your flight plan route, additionally need to add wind correction and along with the total distance on the route add an estimated time of flight the route would take.

Why is it so bad?

UH60 Test Pilot on

Why is it that everything related to computer’s in the federal government so lackluster? It’s even worse that we’re forced to use it.

Was a good app

This was a good app until something changed, and I have to reset my password every time I need to update data.

Does not work

Jamogiles on

Will not load any moving maps or products no matter how much I download. Cannot view any maps. Completely useless user interface. Complete waste of time.

Great, free gov’t app

Great for keeping up with DoD FLIPs PLEASE add/update a function to turn on/off night mode. Since the last update mine is stuck in night mode 🙁

Typical Government Developed App

Leebo4bama on

This is, BY FAR the most user unfriendly app developed! Nothing is intuitive in the flight planning process and very difficult in finding where the flight plan tab is located (a small arrow in the bottom left corner of the moving map tab that doesn’t have any lettering referencing flight plan)! If you have airspace overlays on and you long press a location to try to add that location to the flight plan a window pops up that will not allow you select the waypoint - only the type of airspace you long pressed. There is no color weather radar capability for the app also. DAFIF management is absolutely frustrating with changing your password and then downloading your particular area of interest. (There is a quick tab that allows you to select CONUS or other regions when you finally get there. Even that process is laborious and not intuitive). WHEN your password expires (after you have received emails four weeks out) the number displayed on the geoaxis website is NOT the number you call! When you call that number you are told to call another number because they don’t handle Aero app password reset requests. What isn’t told to anyone is the Aero app is managed by a different entity that piggybacks NGA products for the app. On top of all this your PKI certificates can drop from the server and not allow you to sign in until you sign in to a government computer and reset your account! If our command did not require us to have this app for flight I would delete it immediately. Spend $200 on ForeFlight and avoid ALL THE HASSLE! Almost worthless.

Works Great

With TAC and Helo charts added, this is an excellent app for any pilot- especially flying cross-country VFR. Bit of a pain to set up the account, though.
