Alipay is a leading open platform for payments and digital services in China.
Users with a Chinese ID and bank account can use Alipay to make payments online and in person at various merchants outside of China as they travel for leisure, business, or study.
Foreign visitors to China can connect their credit card to take advantage of Alipay’s widespread acceptance by tens of millions of merchants across the country. Alipay is not designed or intended for use by foreign users in their home country or anywhere outside of China.
With the users' permission this app can connect to Health [HealthKit] to enable users to participate in walkathons and make donations via the "sports" service. This feature is designed for use by Chinese users in China. It is not necessary to enable this feature to make payments.

Big issue with verification
As soon as I try to do account verification needed to be able to pay with Alipay for more than 15’000 yuen or 2000€ euros the Alipay app freezes my account and the verification process is stuck forever rendering the app useless! I already lost two accounts and thus two ways to login (number and apple login) due to this issue! In Wechat I had no such issue with passport upload and account verification. In Alipay if you don’t verify you also won’t be able to use the important transport function which is crucial in China. Nobody buys physical tickets anymore. Everything is in the app. Some stations don’t even have ticketing machines anymore.
Second thing I realized specifically for those living in Germany is that I tried Barclays Credit, DKB Debit and Hanseatic Credit cards and only Barclays Credit got linked to Alipay account. The other two don’t work although I confirm the approval in these banks respective apps. And I tired this both in Germany and in China and it didn’t work. So if you happen to have those credit cards just forget about it. On the other hand in WeChat Hanseatic worked with no issues. I didn’t try linking DKB Debit. In the end due to above mentioned verification and credit card linking issues I happen to use Wechat 98% of the time in China although I like Alipay layout more. Shame they didn’t fix the verification issue. Most important tip for travelers: Before you even consider going to China or booking that first plane or hotel download both WeChat and Alipay and see if you can link your credit card. If this doesn’t work you can forget about your trip altogether! Nobody uses cash in China !!! YOU MUST HAVE WECHAT OR ALIPAY ENABLED!
Absolut nicht zuverlässig..
Bloß nicht auf die App verlassen sonst steht man plötzlich mal komplett ohne Geld da. Zwei Karten haben einfach ohne Grund nicht mehr funktioniert. Also muss man jederzeit Geld und Karten dabei haben.
Dadurch hat dieses schlecht übersetzte App keine Daseinsberechtigung. Warum ist es im deutschen AppStore?

Absolute Katatrophe , wollen mit Reisepass verknüpfen , das gelingt nicht so einfach , man kommt auf eine Blacklist…reinste Datensmmlung , inklusive Biometrie

app works and is - at least partly - in english but the interface is terrible. feels stuck in 2010, hard to navigate through app.
Very buggy and doesn’t work
Verifying the passport is messy, and once everything is set up, it actually doesn’t work in most shops. Basically useless and lost 2 hours. WeChat Pat doesn’t pay either. Back to cash, but it’s not accepted everywhere. Anyway, China is not compatible for non-Chinese.
Update: works now, but the setup process is painful and buggy. 2.5 stars would be more accurate

Der Account wird täglich gesperrt und man muss immer wieder die Kredit Karte und Dennis’s abfotografieren. Das führt zu das man kein Taxi bestellen kann oder wichtige Dinge bezahlt werden
Easy to use
Works perfect with a German phone number in 2023!
Very easy to use and works like a charm for everything up to 300 yuan (around 40 €).
Everything above fails cause the app says „Payment environment not secure“.
Would be 5 stars if I also could pay the hotel/restaurant bills (above 300¥).
Completely useless
I just installed the app, entered my phone number for the very first time, and what happened? “You’ve made too many attempts. Please try again later.” App deleted
Schlechteste App auf der Welt
Gebt gefälligst Geld für richtige Designer und Entwicker aus. Die App ist eine einzige Katastrophe. Ich würde mich schämen sowas meinen Kunden anzubieten.
