Outstanding Payment App for China
Alipay is one of the two main cashless payment systems used in China and unlike its main competitor, it’s easy to set up.
It accepts multiple forms of ID, including the Chinese green card, doesn’t constantly ask you to confirm your identity when you’re trying to make a purchase and is widely accepted for both payment and receiving money.
Need to highlight the restrictions for foreigners better.
Last time I was in China this worked a dream and was a life saver. But now it seems it doesn’t actually work the same way anymore. You can add a foreign card and use it to pay at point of purchase but you can’t top up with it. Point that out clearly at the beginning and you’ll solve a lot of the issues people are having. I don’t know why they changed this to Chinese cards only for top up. Seems to have reduced it’s functionality.
Impossible to setup for a foreigner
Can’t use this awful app without verifying identity which is impossible to do with the method used to capture passport image. It always comes back as blurry or reflective. Guess I won’t be spending any of my money in China!
Absolutely useless
I gave them an extra star as initial setup is more straightforward than WeChat, however it will randomly block your card when doing mini-app transactions or scan-to-pay transactions and then take money from your back-up account without telling you. Customer support is worse than useless as I need to upload a bank statement to unlock my account which is being rejected. I would say to avoid like the plague but unfortunately AliPay is a necessity for paying for things in China.

Updating
When they do an update it literally takes more than two months during that time you cannot do some of the functions in the app which makes it super annoying.
Excellent app for use in China
Lifesaver for foreign visitors to China. It allows you you to pay wherever Alipay is accepted (just about anywhere in China) as creditcards and Apple Pay are much less commonly used than in Europe. It links to your (non Chinese)visa/ Mastercard and payments are taken directly from the card, but vendors never get to see any card details. You make payments by scanning the vendors Alipay code or they use their payment machine to scan the code in the app. Occasionally a bit slow outside the main urban centres, but that is probably the fault of slow internet/ poor signal rather than the app. Highly recommended

这个功能有点烦人
Hopeless
An awful app only good if you have a Chinese bank account. You could use TourCard but it presents another set of convoluted issues during registration which are too complicated to write down. Give up!!
