Your accounts don’t sync well. Open chats don’t sync between devices. It seems like this messenger was made only for phones and then tried to adapt to be more usable for tablets and pcs. But at the end of the day, you have to rely on whatever device you check messages on regularly to manage messages. I am paying for KakaoTalk Drive but it can’t sync Open Chats I manage. I have to manage OpenChats because this messenger is so ubiquitous in Korea that it is the fastest way to get in touch with students when they don’t check the LMS in an educational system and I am still am supposed to find a way to reach them. Kakao markets itself as a good solution for business, which have similar communication needs as educational institutions. There is minimal privacy on this app. There is E2E encryption availability as an option. If you’re a teenager I suppose you can use a password or face ID if you don’t want your parents to see your messages. But if you need more robust privacy, Kakao is not where it is at. Use Signal. Or even WhatsApp or Telegram instead since so few people are still on Signal. Or if there are privacy features, the lack of discoverability makes them too difficult to find. It took a while to find out that the purple button allows us to send messages later. The GUI is confusing. Still, nearly everyone in Korea uses this app, so the switching costs are too high. It must be great to have monopoly power.

The PC version of this app is completly worthless. When you send files, half the time they don’t show up so you have to send them again. When you change the background color, it always changes back to default for no reason. Usability is very unintuitive like adding people or changing settings. So much annoying menu diving. I thought Koreans were supposed to be good at tech, why is the biggest app in the country such utter trash?

Downloaded this app to communicate with korean players from a mobile game since it has translation feature. However, I am not allowed to join open chat(chatroom). Contacted support and I was informed there is no manual fix for that blockage and I will have to wait till their system decides to lift the “block”. But there is a way to get a pass but you need to have a”Korean” mobile number. Why is kakao even in the US App Store if y'all going to make it impossible for foreigners to have all the features available. Then customer support blocks me and stopped replying my emails.

The app won’t show new messages even though it notified me. Tried reinstalling but the problem started again almost immediately. I can see messages on the MacOS app that don’t appear on my phone. Phone won’t send messages either.

I got KakaoTalk to talk to one of my friends who has a Samsung phone so I could contact them from my iPad. There are many fun elements to KakaoTalk such as how you can design your profile, and how there are many MANY cute emojis, both animated or not, that you can send to your friends. There are also themes that change the background art and the app cover and all of them are super cute. The themes are based on different KakaoTalk characters that you see in the emojis. Along with all of the good features, there are many bad parts about KakaoTalk. It takes a LONG time to send pictures and even LONGER to send videos. Also, recently, KakaoTalk has been VERY annoying. Messages are delayed and take a while to send, and pictures and videos take even longer now. Also, some parts of the app are in all Korean. I get that this is a Korean-based app for Koreans, but if you have the language set to English and something in Korean pops up it is very annoying. If KakaoTalk were less glitchy and it loaded faster, this review would be 5 stars. UPDATE: They fixed the extreme glitching! This review was previously 3 stars because of the recent bug, but I’ve now updated it to 4.

Ever since I updated to iOS 18.1.1, KakaoTalk has been having major issues. Calls randomly disconnect due to “network errors,” even though my WiFi and 5G connections are working perfectly fine. On top of that, sending texts has noticeable delays, which is frustrating during conversations. I’m starting to wonder if this app is fully compatible with iOS 18.1.1. Did they thoroughly test it before rolling it out? It’s disappointing for such a widely used app to have these problems after an update. Please address these issues as soon as possible!
