佛陀所教之法，是为了指引如何超越生命和解脱轮回，它绝非盲目和迷信的体系；它是可以实践并亲自验证的修行之道。
上座部佛教坚持传承和保守佛陀的原本教法，不主张对佛陀的教法作过多的发挥和改变，因此也有人将之称为“根本佛教”或者“原始佛法”，以区别后期发展出去的佛教。
