白噪音是指一段声音中的频率分量的功率在整个可听范围（0～20KHZ）内都是均匀的。由于人耳对高频敏感，这种声音听上去是很吵耳的沙沙声。
白噪声或白噪音，是一种功率频谱密度为常数的随机信号或随机过程。换句话说，此信号在各个频段上的功率是一样的，由于白光是由各种频率（颜色）的单色光混合而成，因而此信号的这种具有平坦功率谱的性质被称作是“白色的”，此信号也因此被称作白噪声。
对于新生儿的父母来说，利用白噪音来停止婴儿的哭泣是一个很有效的声音治疗方法。例如，新生儿刚刚离开妈妈的子宫，来到一个陌生的环境，这对他们来说是需要一个适应过程的，而我们生活环境中一些陌生的声音对它们来说有时会令他们感到不安，以及烦躁。他们更喜欢子宫里的嘈杂声，而白噪音与他们熟悉的这种声音有着类似之处。因此，在很多刚出生的婴儿感到不安的时候，听到这种声音都会安静下来。特别是对那些患有新生儿疝气的孩子，他们经常会因为身体的不适以及对环境的不适应而莫名其妙的大声哭闹。
