Why do I need such an unnecessary app just to pay with my Visa/Mastercard in China? I tried to activate the d-CNY App in Shanghai, but because my regular SIM card did not work in China, I never received the activation SMS. Furthermore, I couldn't use ride apps like Didi without having this App working which is total nonesense. The entire system pretty much spoiled our plans to have a 23h stopover in Shanghai, going to the city center, spend a few hundred dollars on food, drinks, and shopping, and then go back to hotel. We ended up in city center with no way to pay anything, no way to use a ride sharing app, and the whole situation left a very bad impression of China on us.
