REVIEWS

"[I] know strong bg play when I see it. This app is the strongest iPhone bg app I've played with by far. It does not cheat period. ...Analyzing these matches with eXtreme Gammon confirms a world class level of play with normal luck factors. If you are losing, get over it. So would 99.9% of the other backgammon players in the world. It is just that good. Learn from it." -Richard Munitz, Giant of Backgammon, #21 world ranking in 2009

"Backgammon NJ plays at an extremely high level with an excellent interface, and I often use it to practice on my iPhone when I am traveling. I recommend it highly to my students & friends." -Phil Simborg, Professional Backgammon Teacher & Player, www.mindgamescenter.com

"I've played over 500 games now; I've checked about 5% of these against World Class Desktop programs (GNU, BGBlitz); and I've actually used some of the competition. NJ has the best interface & has more useful functions than any other backgammon apps out there."

"For serious backgammon players, Backgammon NJ is the way to go." -Macworld.com, May 2012

Frustrating

dah0000 on

I don’t care how many times the developers say that the AI rolls a random, there is no way that EVERY time I have an exposed chip the computer miraculously rolls exactly what it needs to bump me. It has not helped me become a better player - it make me do everything I can to avoid giving the game an opportunity to bump me, even if the right thing to do is leave a point vulnerable. And it doesn’t go both ways - I never get the chance to bump my opponent every time and completely clear the board. Say it’s random and fair, but I don’t buy it. Update 2/28/23 - I don’t care how many times Jimmy copies and pastes the response that the dice rolls are random, they most certainly are not.

In-app purchase not forever as promised

I purchased the analysis capability several years ago. It was supposed to be forever. It worked fine until recently when it said I needed to purchase the analysis capability to use that feature.

Total crap

Go ahead and play the computer 100 games. See if you get to the point during every game where you know what the computer will roll and what you will roll. Guaranteed to insult the intelligence of even those mentally challenged. Why no one can program a backgammon game where the computer rolls RANDOMLY like we do is beyond me.

The proof is playing and using the games hints. Win/loss is about 50% as expected. If you ignore the hints, win/loss increases by almost 4%! Either your hints are bad advice OR the games expect a certain move and doing otherwise throws it off! Win/loss should be best when following all hints! Data studied over 200+ games.

Players back out if losing.

c pitt on

The app is great and is honestly the best one out there, but online players will back out of games when losing. I’m giving a low review because there are plenty of 5 star reviews that are well deserved because the app is very well designed. I downloaded the app and paid to play players online and get some sort of real elo rating, but players quit and drop out of games constantly. otherwise, the design and computer is easily the best i’ve experienced, but online players are fickle.

Best BG on App Store

Hands-down the number one backgammon app. Unless Snowie, GNU or Jellyfish release their app, you’re not going to find a stronger game to help you improve. Disregard all of the people leaving comments about the computer cheating. Those people truly don’t understand the randomness of dice. Years ago when I first purchased, I was in that same boat. However, more than once I have turned on manual rolls and rolled my own dice and you know what? Crazy things also happen. Just this morning I played with Manuel dice and rolled four double sixes in a row. Had this happened on the random generator in the game, most people would’ve thought the game is terrible and on and on. To avoid future trashing of this app from all of those people, do what I did. Roll your own dice and see what happens. I guarantee you’ll always hit some crazy rolls or the computer will have what appears to be the perfect rolls. Guess what though? It happens. Play it long enough and roll your own dice and you will see all of these crazy things you people complain about time and time again.

Exit Program

First things first, this game will make you into a superior backgammon player. But you will suffer through suicidal frustration losing games you know you played masterfully, only to lose to a barrage of perfect rolls and/or doubles at the end. Which wouldn't even be so bad if you, the player, EVER had that luck and won a game like that. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but I just don't buy it. On expert the app cheats. Period. The computer gets doubles 6 times between the times the player does. Yes jimmy, I counted. It has to cheat to stay competitive. If you want to get into a discussion on odds and risk, let's do that. It's what I do for a living. Your system takes unnecessary risks because it knows it won't get hurt. Constant perfect rolls. Let's ask everyone who plays this game. Ok? How often have any of you had 3 of the computers pieces on the bar with one open spot in your home and had the computer roll the exact double it needs to bring in all 3 AND also put you on the bar at the same time? And, how many times have you, the player been in that spot and gotten that double? For me, it's happened so often, I literally EXPECT the computer to get that double. So if it's 5s the comp needs, I won't leave a piece 5 spots away from any computer piece even if it has 3 on the bar and only the 5 spot open in my home. Sorry Jimmy, I won't call you a liar and I don't think you're delusional but your AI is like Skynet, and it's learning without your knowing it. The computer gets the number it needs within 2 rolls every time. It can take the player 5-10 rolls even when he needs 1 of 2 numbers. It's a farce. I have changed my mind. Jimmy, your aggressive lying emails when anyone writes a negative review are the real comedy here. On expert the app cheats, there can be zero doubt. Perfect rolls while you will never get a lucky roll. And if you dare take any risk on expert at all, you will LOSE. GUARANTEED. And you’ll never get even 1/10 of the lucky dice the computer gets. The app cheats and Jimmu Hu attacks anyone who speaks up. It’s the rolls you don’t get as much as the rolls the computer gets. You will never get the roll you need, the computer gets it over 75% of the time. The game cheats on expert, otherwise it cannot be competitive once you’ve reached a certain level of expertise. 6/27/18. Game cheats worse than ever on expert. The computer gets clutch rolls. if the player did too, it would be one thing. But it never happens. The game cheats jimmy.

Vaguely amusing.

Princembm on

It feels totally artificial. The dice are so loaded and predictable it’s depressing. It takes three rolls for me to come in, where in the same situation the computer comes in EVERY TIME. After a while it’s really boring. coming in, you literally never hit an opponents open blot. NEVER.
