New design is a nightmare to navigate

Britt Kaye 25 on

South Africa

With the new design of the BBC app launching earlier this year, I tried to keep an open mind, but after a few months of struggling to use it I’ve just deleted it completely. Navigating to the topics and sub topics you’re interested in is 100x more difficult than it needs to be. I only really manage to find 1-2 articles per day that match my interests if any. This is a massive step back and truly some of the worst app interface I’ve ever experienced.

Navigation is terrible

RBr1@1 on

South Africa

There is a reason native iOS apps allow you to navigate backwards by swiping from left to right on the screen: it allows for one-handed use. This is especially important with content-heavy apps. Omitting this feature is a terrible decision on an app where navigation is so important! Fix it and I'll give you 5 stars.

Breaking news notification tone no longer working after design change

I Alatovic on

South Africa

After the recent major design change to the app, the breaking news notification tone stopped working so now I only get the standard iOS notification tone. I have no shame in admitting that I loved that tone and would love to see it return. Can you please fix this?

New interface a step back

iAlmero on

South Africa

BBC News is a fantastic organisation. This new app design and interface decreases the BBC value proposition, rather than increase it. The previous design was better. Two specific issues: 1. The new UI design is cluttered and messy. An unpleasant experience. I much preferred the red BBC theme but that is personal preference 2. The new design results in bias when scanning and selecting news. Before, each article was presented equally: always a picture, always the same size and font. This allowed the user to select and assign importance. The new interface is a mess. Differential prentation (pics or not, on-screen size, text amount and weight) result in an experience where the user is lead to some articles and not others. I trust the BBC as a fair, equitable reporting source. This layout does not reflect nor achieve that. I now spend less than 10% of the time on the app than I used to. Please improve your interface design and - more importantly - the fairness and equity with which content is visually presented.

Great but missing key feature!

Jansanx on

South Africa

The new app is excellent overall, with sleek design and comprehensive coverage. However, it lacks a text highlighting feature, which would greatly improve the reading experience for readers.

Not to be trusted for news. Seek alternative

Untrustworthy news site. Bias in favour of Global North countries. Paints Africa and Global South in a poor light. Vestige of colonialism.

Amazing news

It’s BRITISH Broadcasting Corp, of course it’s 10 stars out of 5!

New app an unfortunate step back

DennisDy on

South Africa

The old app was great but unfortunately the developers need to try and earn their bacon. As usual made it less functional and bland.

Terrible change

MaartyMMM on

South Africa

I used to have a bbc news app, now it’s bbc? No colour, unintuitive and asks for sign in each time a login creating a barrier to entry. More ads. Why did you let some vapid design director or team use bbc news as their tapestry to express the bland views on aesthetics at the cost of its users. Shame on you.

Cumbersome

Don’t like the new unwieldy layout at all… And too many repeated articles
