Bible Vocab

Learn Greek and Hebrew vocab!

Published by: ROBERT B TURNBULL

Description

Bible Vocab is a simple and fun way to learn vocabulary from the Greek New Testament and the Hebrew Old Testament. Watch our online tutorial here: https://youtu.be/W63jhYWNNv0
Professor Robert Plummer (co-author of Going Deeper with New Testament Greek) said about the app: 'Who could imagine that a Greek New Testament vocabulary app with this much power and flexibility even existed? I'm amazed at the intuitive design and ability to customize vocabulary acquisition to particular sections of text. I'm confident that this vocabulary app will help thousands of pastors and students read the Greek New Testament with greater fluency, confidence, and understanding. I enthusiastically endorse it.'
* Vocab Lists *
You can choose vocab lists from any passage in the Bible or from the following leading Greek and Hebrew textbooks:
* Fuller & Choi, Invitation to Biblical Hebrew
* Garrett & DeRouchie, A Modern Grammar for Biblical Hebrew
* Hackett, A Basic Introduction to Biblical Hebrew
* Pratico & Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew (eds. 2 & 3)
* Ross, Introducing Biblical Hebrew, Baker Academic
* Seow, A Grammar for Biblical Hebrew
* Baugh, A New Testament Greek Primer
* Decker, Reading Koine Greek, Baker Academic
* Duff, The Elements of New Testament Greek
* Kostenberger, Merkle, & Plummer. Going Deeper with New Testament Greek
* Merkle & Plummer, Beginning with New Testament Greek
* Mounce, Basics of Biblical Greek
* Rollinson, Online Greek Textbook
NB. The vocab items may occasionally be in a different form to how they appear in the textbook.
* Spaced Repetition *
The smarter way to learn vocab. This allows you to test yourself on items at set intervals which increase the more times that record that know it correctly. Just tap on the spaced repetition button (the arrow button in the right corner) and it will tell you the words you need to study next.
* Reading Mode *
Use the power of spaced repetition to get better at reading whole verses in the Bible. If you've learned enough vocab in Spaced Repetition mode to cover whole verses, Reading Mode will introduce these verses to you, first with the parsing, dictionary form and glosses and thereafter you will need to read it just the original language. These verses will be shown to you at intervals which increase the more familiar you are with each verse.
* Slideshow Modes *
Vocab Mode: where you see the words in their dictionary form
Parsing Mode: where you see the words in the way they appear in the text and you are tested on their grammatical form.
Verses Mode: see whole verses as well as parsing, dictionary forms and glosses.
* Greek Audio *
Dr. George Athas from Moore College in Sydney has recorded the audio for all the words in the Greek New Testament using a restored koine pronunciation system. You can try the audio for the 100 most frequently occurring used words for free and if you like it you can pay to download more.
* Data Sources *
You can choose between four Greek Testament texts: SBL, Westcott-Hort, Tischendorf and Byzantine. The OT text is based on the Westminster Leningrad Codex, as provided by Open Scriptures. The Greek Lexicons are:
* Dodson (2010) - greeklexicon.org
* Mounce Concise Greek-English Lexicon (© 1993. William Mounce. All Rights Reserved - billmounce.com/greek-dictionary)
The Hebrew/Aramaic Lexicon is derived chiefly from the Brown-Driver-Briggs, as provided by Open Scriptures.
You can also use the glosses from the available textbooks.

Bible Vocab Reviews

Amazing vocabulary learning and review app

@jeffsolof on

United States

The learning mode is ideal for picking up new vocabulary: just specify the text and chapter(s) you want to focus on, and it introduces the words to you in small batches, only adding more once you’re confident with what’s come before. Then the review (slide show) mode is great for reviewing for a quiz, or — in my case right now — an upcoming final. We’re using Basic Biblical Hebrew Grammar (3rd edition) by Practico and Van Pelt; there is maybe a 10% discrepancy between the words in the book and the words offered in the app for the corresponding chapter(s), but any missing words are quickly picked up from a final check of the text.

Add on pricing not disclosed upfront

Buy the app , then to unlock more features you need to pay again. I’d prefer the pricing be higher upfront for all features. The experience would be more trust building.

Overall great but could be excellent!

Losispumped on

The app does what it claims and so much more. I give it 4.5 stars but could be 5 if the developers could: 1. Update Mounce BBG to 4 ed. 2. If there was someway for the audio to not autoplay when the word comes up but instead allow the student time to read the word and then select to hear pronunciation. Right now it’s either “on/off” for the entire app.

Over charge

Charged twice for two identical app and twice for two identical in app purchases…Apple won’t refund…beware of huge over charges….

Good for Greek, Hebrew has misspellings

DursoM1579 on

While paper notecards truly are the best for memorization, I have used this app on and off for Greek with benefit. I just began a review of Hebrew and I noticed today that the app contains numerous misspellings of Hebrew words. For example Yahweh was spelled as Jehovah (YHWH consonants with vowels of Adonai), Jerusalem is missing a vowel, mar (water) is misspelled. This was after only looking at two chapters of vocab from one textbook. Definitely using ONLY paper notecards for my Hebrew review. This was a surprising and unfortunate finding. I cannot recommend this for Hebrew vocab.

Heads Up

***This is to let others know before they download. I have no mal intention.*** One can access almost nothing without paying. Everything a selected resulted in a message that I had “not yet unlocked” the feature. I realize that apps take money to create and keep running. The features offered are amazing study tools! This is to let others know before they download.

Great for vocab, audio doesn’t work

I paid the audio package and it’s never worked.

Lacks sync capability

Great app, but I do not see an option to sync between different devices

Great, just some errors

pintobean96 on

United States

This app is a big help when studying Greek and Hebrew. I notice, however, some issues with some Hebrew words. I use the Miles/Van Pelt 3rd edition BBH textbook. Some words in the textbook are missing in the app and sometimes the vowel pointing is just incorrect. Other than those issues, this works out very well.

Absolutely Fantastic with one Request

SavedByTheBlood on

United States

This app is without a doubt the most comprehensive and efficient way of learning your Bible vocab. I have one request that would make it amazing. If all the Hebrew also contained the audio this app would be top of the line.
