## Birds of Ireland Field Guide Description
BirdWatch Ireland operates over 30 local branches and has more than 15,000 members, making it the largest ornithological organisation in Ireland. This app offers a comprehensive guide to Ireland’s birdlife. All breeding bird species are included in the free version, while over 260 rare vagrant species can be unlocked with an annual subscription.
A standout, one-of-a-kind feature of this app is the set of identification plates, custom-designed specifically for Ireland’s birds. These expertly crafted illustrations depict the various subspecies and plumage variations found across the country. Each plate highlights all major plumage differences, key identification features, and traits that help distinguish similar species.
The plates are complemented by detailed text covering taxonomy, abundance, size, appearance, identification tips, potential lookalikes, ecology, vocalisations, breeding, and behaviour. The free base version also includes powerful tools such as manual ID features, a ‘similar species’ finder, comparison views, European distribution maps, and the ability to create and manage your own sightings and field lists.

Unlock the app’s full potential with optional premium features:
• Use cutting-edge AI to identify birds by sound or photo – automatically and instantly
• Access over 1,140 bird calls and songs, plus video clips showcasing typical behaviour
• Explore lifelike 3D bird models and view species life-sized in your environment using Augmented Reality

## Birds of Ireland Field Guide Reviews in Ireland

### ****- "Good App"
This app is good and easy to use but I think at nearly €20 per annum is expensive
-- Stonioca, 2025-08-21

### ***-- "Hard to use"
I have just started to try using this app alongside Merlin, but it seems very difficult in comparison and has add ons like recording sightings but little explanation as to how this should be used (like an ebird checklist or for one-off rare birds ?). Also the filtered search seems to offer only migrant birds ? The search filters provided do not offer enough options, for example I tried to find a domestic mallard by using these options but nothing even close.
On the plus side, the photo recognition appears to be very good, and allows you to take a photo live, or select from gallery (on iphone). It would be really useful if it would allow import of sound files but this only takes live recording. I have invested in the paid version in the hope it will be developed to be more user friendly, but fir now I will be sticking with Merlin.
