Founded by the inventors of the technology behind the ELISA kits for determination of calprotectin in stools and other biological materials, CalproSmart is a system to monitor the effect of medical treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The app is part of a rapid home-based test system that, by calculation of the concentration of the calprotectin protein in an extract of faeces, both enables identification of possible non-responders and patients who are in an early phase of relapse. The app gives detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to perform the test. The concentration of calprotectin is determined by the color intensity of two lines on the test which is based on antibody-antigen reaction. Using a smartphone, the patient captures an image of the test which is used by the system to calculate the concentration of calprotectin.
