Canals.UK is a useful companion for anyone who uses the canals; boating or walking!

Navigate the 2,000 miles of UK canals. The App shows locks, bridges, aqueducts, tunnels, mooring and facilities and much more, along our canal network.

The FREE version includes:

•	All the UK canals mapped with locks, bridges and facilities.
•	Shows: Mile markers, Boatyards, CRT Notices, Fish & Chips, Launderettes, Canal side Pubs, local convenience stores.
•	A list of all canals in a useful linear diagram which will show you where you are on a specific canal and update your location if tracking is on.
•	Canal & River Trust Notices of any navigation restrictions.
•	Useful phone numbers and links to websites.
•	My Boat - keep relevant details about your boat.
•	Get estimated boat speed, location and sunrise/sunset times.
•	Notifications

Upgrade ‘Go Pro’ with in-App purchase includes:

•	Nearby: find useful points or interest that are near your current location
•	Daily Boat Log to record any diary details to show you are a continuous boater!
•	Create your own Points of Interest (POI) and plot them on the map e.g. your favourite mooring spots, where to pick blackberries or favourite pub.
•	Canal Rings: shows the major canal rings that you can journey along.
•	Route Planner: plan a canal route and get an estimate of how long it will take.
•	Boat Tracker - track your boat position even when the App is not running (obviously the iPhone/iPad needs to be on).

### ****- "Great for Planning"
This is a very good app for planning journeys. The route planner is simple to use and with a little experience you can tune the speed / lock times such that you will get a very reasonable estimate of the route time.  However, it is not as good as other apps for showing you progress along your route; it could do with a speed display, a more logical and relevant logging feature, and a better background map.  Also, it does like to have the internet, not always available on UK canals!
Despite all my comments, I will be using this app regularly before and during my canal trips.

### ****- "My go to app for quick routing calculations"
We are a serial electric hybrid boat and, by choice, cruise at a slower speed than many boats. This app enables you to customise your speed so that you get an quick and more accurate estimate of how long a particular journey might take you. You need to “Go Pro” to do this but it’s money we’ll spent in my opinion.

I’m using this to get from Milton Keynes up to Scarisbrick. It’s been great, love all the functionality and recommended it to a number of others ….. only point I think could improve it would the ability for boaters to add notes ie if you find something helpful or know of a issue it would be handy, possibly with dates

### ***-- "A Good Idea Poorly Implemented"
This app looks potentially useful but despite upgrading from the free version it still feels like a work in progress that doesn’t deliver anything approaching a ‘pro’ experience.  For example, the route planner gives only basic distance and estimated time, without the detailed waypoint information provided by the free RCR online route planner, and there is no obvious way to save or export the information.  The ability to add POIs sounds helpful but is unintuitive and there is no ‘help’ facility worth the name.  Upgrading from the free version opens up the ‘Pro’ modules, but amazingly the menu still flags them as if they are restricted, and continues to display the option to ‘Go Pro’.  Overall this is an expensive (£12) but disappointing app which doesn’t merit the ‘pro’ label and is nowhere near being a substitute for a Nicholson guide.

Works really smoothly and fast, clear layout uncluttered. I used it for the first time yesterday to plot my progress. I don’t need much and the app meets my needs. Purchased the Pro features and nothing changed in the app. £10 for nothing new. Requested a refund from Apple. Not impressed.

After the developer reached out to me, we were able to resolve the issue with the Pro Features not showing up. Very much appreciate him taking the time to personally look after this. 

Everything is good and the Canals.UK app has all the features that I would require and then some! Highly recommended. Happy customer.

Edited in light of developer feedback - I’d not spotted the features I thought would be useful! 

This is brilliant. It could almost replace my Nicholson’s Guides. It’s so much handier as it always knows where you are and great for planning trips. The perfect app for boaters and for me it even worked without 4G - I assume it must use GPS

Very little in the basic version.. and when things like the Crinan being ignored completely you have to question the accuracy of the information.. or is it that the Crinan canal has just recently been built and so not been included yet in this version and it will be included in the update 🤷‍♂️🤔
I would suggest that you check the accuracy of your other data if you miss things like the Crinan canal.. and perhaps include more in the free version

Thank you very much for your response but sorry I may be missing your response but for example there is a pinch point at the end of the Shropshire Union canal near Ellesmere.  I can’t see information about the dimensions of the canal here.  I can’t see any dimension information for the locks I looked at either.

I think this is the best app around for narrowboat cruisers but it’s not perfect.   My biggest gripe is that some data is missing such as water points - even some of those which are shown in the most well known book of canal maps . (Begins with N).  There also seems no way of alerting the developers to this - a feature in the app to report missing or wrong information would be a useful feature.  Some of the data seems to be missing when using nearby even when the feature is on the map. Overall good however and I think worth the tenner for pro version.
