That historic storm caused telegraph systems to spark and fail worldwide. Scientists estimate Carrington-class events occur roughly once every 100-150 years, meaning we're statistically overdue after 167 years. A similar event today could disrupt satellites, power grids, and communications globally. Whether you're a citizen scientist, space enthusiast, amateur radio operator, or aurora chaser, Carrington gives you the tools to participate in space weather science—not just observe it. REAL-TIME SPACE WEATHER • KP Index: Track geomagnetic storm levels with 1-minute and 3-hour updates • X-ray Flux: Monitor solar flare activity (B, C, M, X class) • Solar Wind: Live speed, density, and magnetic field data • Particle Flux: Proton and electron radiation levels • Radio Blackout: HF propagation conditions EARTH MONITORING • Earthquakes: Multi-source aggregation • Volcanoes: Global volcanic activity tracking • Aurora Forecasts: OVATION model with visibility predictions • TEC & DRAP: Ionospheric conditions for radio enthusiasts INTERACTIVE VISUALIZATIONS • Dashboard: At-a-glance gauges for all critical metrics • BLOT Map: Earthquakes, volcanoes, aurora, wind, pressure & more layers coming • 3D Planet Map: Explore the solar system with real orbital data • 46 Solar Video Streams • 3 ENLIL Models: solar wind propagation forecasts SMART ALERTS — 28 ALERT TYPES • Push notifications for space weather events • KP index, X-ray flares, proton storms, radio blackouts, and more • Earthquake, volcano, and cosmic ray notifications • Location-based alerts for aurora visibility and nearby seismic events • Community alerts from fellow observers worldwide CITIZEN SCIENCE & RESEARCH • Built for citizen scientists—not just passive observers • Academic paper discovery from arXiv, OpenAlex, and more • Topics: heliophysics, geomagnetic storms, ionospheric science, seismology • Citizen scientist review: discuss and evaluate research with the community • Historical data archive for your own analysis • Collaboration features coming soon for citizen science projects SUBSCRIPTION TIERS • Observer (Free): Essential features with ads • Pioneer: Ad-free experience with expanded alerts • Voyager: Full charts, 3D maps, and advanced features • Commander: Complete access including location alerts and research tools Join thousands of citizen scientists watching the skies with Carrington. I’m inquiring about when the Carrington alerts will be back. It’s been a number of weeks with no access to them, no notifications, and just a notice updates are coming. I just get a blank white screen when accessing that option. Turned them off then on per instructions with no change. Not sure we’re interested renewingr the app at this point. Thanks in advance for your response and information -- Wanderinglion, 2026-01-19 ### *---- "Junk App. Unresponsive support." I used to enjoy using this app. However, after writing them indicating that the main splash screen has been the same one that has been for several months. There was no response from support. Make sure you make the right session before paying for this app. It says it has huge updates ahead. But that’s being posted for a while. I’ve been paying for this app. Getting very disappointed and its functionality. Choose your purchase wisely. -- mtntrek, 2026-01-19 ### *---- "App is Non Functional" It worked fine until just recently when notifications went off the rails and app says major updates coming but it never came. No communication and can’t contact them either. Very disappointing and frustrating! -- emikooken, 2026-01-14 ### ***-- "Need iOS 26 Update ASAP" Need app update real soon - Jan 17-20 2026 coming up. SDO & GOES X-Ray stopped popping up. Also, my alert messages feed is stuck in Dec 2025. If you have to, let Claude AI or Google do the SWIfT rewrite. Thank you! -- Quackers Web, 2026-01-13 ### **--- "Was good" Desperately needs updates. It has been neglected and has promised updates for too long. Half of the stuff hasn’t worked for a long time. -- AKmoses, 2026-01-13 ### ***-- "Hello?" I have my yearly sub renewal coming soon but I think I’m going to cancel. Which is unfortunate because I really liked this app and the info it provided but it’s gone off the rails and nobody will respond to inquiries on X etc. An update would be appreciated even if it’s been abandoned. Thanks. -- Thor314, 2026-01-09 ### **--- "Why so many bugs lately?" I used to love this app but recently the alert feature has gone wild. It sends me so many alerts that I have had to delete the app twice. I sent queries to contact@carrington 3x with zero response ever. -- Ker-cat, 2026-01-07 ### ***-- "Driving me nuts" This app used to be so reliable but lately it will drive you crazy with a few hundred if not though notifications of earthquakes. It need some major updates or something -- Dewgirl66, 2026-01-04 ### *---- "App is now non-functional" I have the paid version of the app and it was great until the last four months. I receive notifications of alerts, but the alerts screen is always blank so you have no idea what the alert is for. I've tried contacting them through the app and get no response. Don't spend your money on this. -- ZuzuJM, 2026-01-02 ### *---- "Still disappointing (was: What just happened?!)" UPDATE 2025-12: Although the app had improved slightly since the original review (below), it has significantly decreased in terms of reliability. Alerts sometimes appear in droves and have to be turned off to avoid uselessness. Earthquake listings no longer show magnitude, but have some sort of unexplained color coding. Tsunami warnings no longer appear. Many settings are still not documented. And the UX is still terrible. Very sad to see what was once a great, supported app turn into such flaming rubbish. ORIGINAL REVIEW: With the revision of the app in January 2023, it's like the app was taken over by a 7th grader. Not only did it change completely with absolutely no explanation, including some new poorly written sign-in page, but key information, like the map showing the location of each quake, is now gone. The color choices make thing near illegible (orange and red on turquoise?!), the new waffle menu is poorly written and organized (settings are under "Admin"?!), and there are highly irritating and distracting animations that cannot seem to be turned off. Within minutes of opening the new dashboard, several errors appeared, including a traceback preceded by a message that "this VM is violating DART standards by providing a traceback"). Honestly, as a Kickstarter backer ("founder") of the original app, I find this new revision to be incredibly disappointing, to put it in the best possible light.
