## Chicago Avenue Moon Description
Chicago Avenue Moon is a responsive, generative music app that gathers a set of variables including date, time, phase of the moon, and GPS location, and uses that data to determine how its music unfolds, in real-time. The piece is intended for a listener in motion, whose route and speed affect the composition.

Composer Joshua Dumas wrote 1000 brief musical phrases which the app manipulates, sequences, and layers to create trillions and trillions of variations, a unique experience with every listen.

He imagines the piece as a personalized soundtrack for strangers’ mundanities—an effort to help re-enchant a person’s daily commute, trip to the laundromat, or evening jog. The piece includes field recordings of his own walks around his neighborhood (Ukrainian Village in Chicago) in an attempt to bring his own experience of place in communication with others’, anywhere on earth.

Though the piece grapples with permutations of impossible scale and explores how limited materials can give rise to grand complexities, it has humble beginnings. During the hottest weeks of the summer, while conceiving and composing, Dumas would open the door of the studio, and from the piano would watch the moon rise over Chicago Avenue. To escape the heat, he’d walk around his neighborhood, imagining this music, his revery disrupted and inspired by the sounds from the street.

The app was developed in collaboration with Junecloud’s Mike Piontek, was recorded by Matt DeWine at Pieholden Suite Sound in Chicago, and was supported in part by an Individual Artists Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events and Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Chicago Avenue Moon was performed by Josh Bell, Johnny Caluya, Kate Drown, Whitney Johnson, and Joshua Dumas, whose other projects include: Verma, Quarter Mile Thunder, Mar Caribe, Soundings, and Quiet Errors.

Chicago Avenue Moon is a universal app available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. A device with GPS is recommended, but not required—that includes any iPhone or an iPad with Cellular.

## Chicago Avenue Moon Reviews in United States

### ***** "Fantastic music generations!"
Chicago Ave. is simply wonderful. Relaxing. World perception transposing. I’ve rediscovered this pretty sounding app. :-€
-- Eriptron, 2024-08-20

### ***** "Magic"
Magic
-- sw3dge, 2020-02-27

### ***** "The soundtrack"
In an urban world that constantly assaults the senses, and thus our essential humanity, this music and this software allows one to compose — simply by walking — one's own soundtrack of resistance and affirmation of life.
-- portalkeeper, 2017-05-07

### ***** "Beautiful app"
I'm literally standing on Chicago Ave. now looking at the moon, listening intently.
-- Hacksaw Jim Duggan, 2016-08-23

### ***-- "Interesting idea"
Interesting idea - I applaud the creativity and inventiveness. However, minus two stars because this app simply cannot justify why it needs access to your location except when the app is in use.
-- JRH Reviews, 2016-08-22

### ***** "Great app!"
Glad that you added the ability to tip, because the app is sure worth more than I paid for it. This is one of my favorite apps of all time. I hope you will make another like it sometime with a new collection of sounds.
-- Sockpuppeteer, 2016-08-21

### ****- "WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! stunning"
i stumbled on this app by chance and it is stunning. such relaxing ambient music and i mean that in a very non-boring cliche way. the most amazing part is the fact that the music is different depending on the cycles of the moon. it is a full moon and this is beautiful.......
-- rcon303, 2015-02-04

### ****- "Quite Fun"
It's cool to play with and use during different activities, interface is nice too. Do note (as it says in the description) it's not meant for when you're sitting still. The refrains are quite repetitive and annoying if you're not moving. I still find a lot of similarity among the pieces strung together (or even repetition of them), but overall it's nice for the few hours I've played music from it.

### ***** "Beautiful in every possible way."
Downloaded this the instant I found out about it. Absolutely gorgeous interface with a beautiful soundtrack. Well done once more, Junecloud.
-- Terrance Shaw, 2014-02-12

### ***** "Simply Incredible"
There is nothing like this app.

I own all of the iOS apps made by JuneCloud and they're an amazing group. Everything they do is done with class, style, and elegance. They are a top tier quality developer.

You won't regret this purchase for a second.
