Current is an RSS reader built on a simple idea: your feed should never make you feel behind.

There are no unread counts. No red badges. No number climbing while you sleep, silently tallying everything you haven't read. Current shows you what's new right now, and that's it. Nothing is owed. Nothing is overdue. You open it when you want to read, and whatever's there is what's there.

The design is intentional. Every screen, every interaction, every animation was built to feel calm and unhurried. Articles are presented beautifully with clean typography and generous whitespace. Navigation is fluid and intuitive. The app gets out of the way and lets you focus on what matters: the writing.

I love the ideas behind this RSS reader but I quickly ran into issues where Add Source couldn’t detect feeds from URLs I’d copied from RSS app Reeder.

I’ve hit a bunch of bugs: It doesn’t apply the text size setting when viewing articles. It doesn’t use the published date of articles, so when I imported my feeds it shows loads of old articles as new. The menus often freeze and need multiple taps to recognise a button press.

Developer is responsive, though. So I look forward to the app being more polished!

I previously wrote a rather ungracious review of this: the author replied saying that the things I complained about (seriffed typeface with no option to change, some settings problems) were being addressed.

I still think this is not for me, but it probably is for some people.

But mostly, I want to simply withdraw that earlier review: I had no cause to be so rude as this is a thing made by a person not some faceless corporation.  So I'm sorry: I wasn't thinking.

I could not get past the introduction to test this app. Tired reinstalling three times. Tried contacting support and failed. Finally, I deleted the app and wrote this review. I'll give it a try again in a few months time.

### ****- "Taking the heat out of the daily news"
Current is a bold, opinionated new app which blends a specific flow-based approach to RSS, very deliberately steering away from unread article counts in favour of browsing the flow of content. Rather than having to tick each article as you read, the flow lets it all go by and it’s up to you to pick out an article to read now or save for later.

In parallel with this minimalistic approach, there’s an interesting idea of picking out certain sites as Voices and once you identify as such, you get a nice visual representation of these voices showing how much you engage with them. You can click to view their individual feed and stats. It’s a fascinating new twist for an RSS reader, encouraging you to be more mindful of who you’re following.

There’s also currents which allow you to group together feeds to follow specific themes, essentially folders for certain sources.

This is an elegant, sophisticated app which has launched with plenty of polish, but is still being very actively developed with a very engaged developer who’s quick to respond to suggestions and bugs in the company’s forum. It’s an exciting time to be aboard and see how the app develops and contribute feedback as it develops.

When most apps are leaning into subscription based payments, a one-off fee is very welcome and anyone curious about taking the plunge should explore the website and beautiful documentation. In these times, an app which has a more meditative design approach, which is diametrically opposed to the relentless attention seeking of social media design, is more than welcome.

### ***** "Enough to restore your faith in software"
This a beautiful rethinking of one of the last pieces of web technology that still works the way the web was supposed to work. Not only that, it’s a love letter to the promise of the App Store in those first few years.  Small teams or individuals practicing a real craft. You pay your money and you get something thoughtful, interesting, different. No dark patterns, no manipulation, just software that helps the user do something better than they could before. Something that has sadly become all too rare in the last decade.
