Oh what witty repartee. Enemies getting progressively more hard to the point where there is no skill just endless grinding and chaining of health potions and energy to wear them down. No strategy. No skill. No combinations to discover. Ultimately repays endless saving and bedrolling. Finished without any sense of achievement or fulfilment just tedious repetition and no repeat value to mix match and discover. It also crashes repeatedly. Sorry but utter waste of time hiding behind semi literate and not very comic dialogue and a couple of mad unicorns. Beautiful graphics, memorable soundtrack, intriguing story, and a combat system that has some strategic depth. I also appreciate that it’s a proper premium game with no in-app purchases. Unlike Titan Quest - whose buggy second act and obtuse saving system broke its promise of greatness - Ember delivers on all fronts. Exploration, character levelling, narrative, combat mechanics, a surprising amount of voice acting... Admittedly, it all comes at a mid-tier price point on the App Store, but the depth of gameplay more than makes up for the investment. Combat initially takes a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve tailored a suite of complimentary special attacks among your party of heroes - and dropped some high level potions into your hot bar - you can tackle even the toughest opponents. Crafting is the only slightly redundant section of the game, as exploring the world seeking resources inevitably leads to defeating enemies with better loot than your own. Healing can be taken care of by repeated sleeps on a bedroll - as opposed to cooking recipes - but you will need to dig into the creation of elixirs if you’re to improve your chances of survival against boss level monsters. Whether traveling between the diverse zones of this detailed world, getting distracted as an aristocratic matchmaker or relishing the chance of an ambush out in the wild, this compelling adventure locks your attention for an incredible amount of time.
