But I relented so I could use the app and when I logged in the Apple location services permission screen appeared. No problem I thought, because it needs access when I use the app - so I set it to allow only when using the app. My understanding was, the app would be invoked when it detected background movement consistent with driving. This is not unusual because iPhones do this for other apps. Logic would say that when this happens, the app would open as a background service (background app refresh was on) and the car journeys would be recorded. But the next time I opened the app to check if my journeys had uploaded the app demanded I gave it location access! Obviously, I had granted location access whilst using the app so it was surprising to see the app asking for this when using the app. I actually couldn’t get the app to open until I’d granted it permanent location access. Then I checked to see uploads and discovered it hadn’t recorded any of my journeys! So, it appears this app demands 24/7 permanent location access to even open which is far too invasive for my liking. If they sort out the location access to be invoked only when driving I’ll try the app again. Gradually collects data of your car journeys without any effort and then gives you a load of appropriate car options relative to how you travel. Also the little extra info about pollution is quite astounding.
