Families is designed to operate in conjunction with Legacy Family Tree, the leading Windows-based genealogy software from Millennia Corp. Your Legacy family files can be easily transferred to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, enabling them to be viewed and edited wherever you are. Families supports the following functionality:

Families uses a highly efficient database implementation, allowing very large family files to be supported. Users have successfully displayed and edited files containing over 300,000 individuals on an iPhone.

Families requires access to a Wi-Fi network or use of a USB connection in order to transfer family files between your device and your PC.

Families requires a companion program running on the PC to transfer family files to and from the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. This program, Families Sync, can be downloaded free of charge from www.telgen.co.uk/families/sync.

Families problem?

Love the app & the way it works with Legacy! But what has happened to the Surname search since the last upgrade??

This is a great addition to Legacy for allowing use on my ipad. Works extremely well.

Best solution for taking Legacy database withyou on iphone or ipad

I've been using this app for over a year and it’s great for taking your legacy database with you on either iphone or ipad. Some people have given it bad reviews saying it doesn't work or they can't sync their data. You do need to download the companion app from the telgen website that converts you legacy database into a format that app can use. If you download the companion PC app and follow the instructions carefully you should have no problems synchronising your data via itunes. I take 1 star off only for not being completely seamless and idiot proof but for Legacy Family tree users it’s the best solution you can get. I don't normally write app reviews but some of the negative reviews I think are unjustified, seemingly written by people who don't understand how to use the companion conversion app on the PC. If you know where to find you Legacy database file on your computer you should find this app useful. If you just run Legacy and don't understand where it saves the data this app may beyond your computer literacy and you may need some assistance in getting it to synchronise your database to iphone/ipad.

Rubbish

Way too expensive for a very limited app. Not much functionality, especially compared to Legacy Family Tree program that it Syncs from. Very disappointing. How do I get a refund?

Easy to use.

A good program, just need to remember how to synchronise using the USB cable. Might have to put the program on to the PC as well and try using WiFi.

Great app

Works a treat, and in some ways easier than Legacy, but the two complement each other for the perfect package. Backup/transfer was tricky the first time, but on iOS 4.2.1, wifi transfer is simple and super quick. Have Legacy closed and open Families Sync on your PC. Open the Families app and head to the Families screen and choose Sync. The PC should find the phone (you might have to type in the IP address the first time). Then decide which direction you are transferring and it's done in seconds. I do it every time I change data on either file - its that easy. A really good app for working on the family tree when not at home, that does exactly what it claims to do. Would get five stars but for the annoying not quite random crashes. Annoying, but you don't lose data.

Have only just got it going today. Once I knew what I was doing it was fairly easy to transfer files across but cannot use wifi between pc and iPad so must have up to date iTunes on pc and use USB lead. Early days yet but something I noticed immediately is how easy it would be for anyone to change or add/delete data, either accidentally or deliberately....which might not be immediately obvious. What I would like to have is a password access to keep my data safe from this kind of potential problem.

Families - Great program

Love the application. It is great companion to my PC version of Legacy. In some respects it is easy to use than my PC version. It means I can take my tree with me to see family and add information and photos while I chat to them. Althought it has a tendancy to shut down in the middle of editing which can be very annoying. In saying this as it saves as it goes it doesn't lose much information when this happens. Hoping this gets fixed with the next update. The Syncing program families sync which has to be installed with Families is not very user friendly and required a bit of fiddling to get results. On the plus side it is free!
