Major e-book formats are ePub (including main features of ePub3), unencrypted Kindle azw3 (a.k.a. mobipocket) and fb2(.zip).
Other supported formats: RTF, doc (MS Word), HTML, plain text.
FBReader can synchronise your library, reading positions, bookmarks, etc., with the FBReader book network (https://books.fbreader.org/), a Google Drive™ based cloud service.
Alternatively, you can download books in the browser and open them using FBReader.
A rich set of options allows you to configure reading parameters and app behaviour for your preference.
The free version of FBReader has a few limitations. You cannot store more than ten books in the library. The built-in online translation feature is disabled. You can upgrade FBReader to the full version to unlock all the features.

Both handy and to use and pleasant on the eyes
Although for some reason it takes around 2 edits to change the color of a highlight at version 1.1.4 20220522. Would it be possible to have some kind of single tap color rotating buttons without going into the actual editing screen for the content of the notes?
Appealing, but
This has been the only attractive independent reader, and a one-time payment is easy.
Yet the app has basic bugs really getting in the way (how to show the library after a search… still blocked), and synchronisation is unreliable. Such issues are likely to disappear in next releases, and would like to help, but right now just wishing for stronger base app.
Very convenient
Thank you so much, this application is very convenient. I'm glad it has been added to the AppStore for Mac.
UPD. I lower the rate for one star because I have found one problem. The book I read has a table, but it seems that your reader doesn't support tables. I could see script for the table in the TextEdit, but Fb2 reader shows nothing.
UPD2. I have added <p> at the beginnig and </p> at the end of table code and now it appeared. But still this is not a table. This is code of one table:
