Description

The animals found in the south eastern Australian State of Victoria are unique and diverse. Detailed descriptions of animals and endangered species status combine with stunning imagery and sounds to provide a valuable reference that can be used in urban, bush and coastal environments. The content has been developed by scientists at Museums Victoria, Australia’s largest public museum organisation.
The app holds descriptions of over 950 species encompassing birds, fishes, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals, freshwater, terrestrial and marine invertebrates, spiders, and insects including butterflies. From animals found in rockpools, minibeasts in your garden, to wildlife you might see in the bush. We’ve put in a lot of species, but it’s still a fraction of the complete fauna of Victoria. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time.
We are continually improving our app. If you have any feedback, please contact us using the App Support button in the Ratings and Reviews section.
This app is one of a suite of field guides for each state and territory, developed by Australia’s leading natural history museums.

Field Guide to Victorian Fauna Reviews

I absolutely love this app

LynetteJ on

Australia

I absolutely love this app and before the recent “update” I would have given 6 stars out of 5 because it’s so great. I use the app regularly on my walks and when I’m out and about. The reason I’ve dropped my rating back to a 4 is because the maps have been removed!!! Why have you done this? They were SO useful and I used them often. Please please bring the maps back. If you do, I will immediately raise my rating to 5🌟 Thank you for an excellent app, that will be close to perfect once tha maps are returned. 🤩

Love this app …

… but really missing the maps in the recent update. Hopefully there will be more funding - audio files for more of the birds, frogs and other wildlife calls would be nice! The photos are great, but often we can only hear our little friends out there in our gardens or in the wild.

Would love to see an update

I rely on this app sometimes heavily while out in the field. Bird calls need to be added as majority don’t have them registered. Could probably add a few more species in. It’s a great app but could definitely do with an upgrade

Great guide to Victorian fauna

I love this app, which I’ve had and used for years. It’s so interesting to learn about the birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and even insects and aquatic invertebrates that are found in Victoria. As well as descriptions and distribution maps, it has photos and sounds/calls, so is particularly useful for identifying birds in my back garden or in the bush. You can also see how common or endangered different creatures are. Well done Museums Victoria, for producing this app.

Amazing app

This app is amazing. Always helps me to identify the wildlife I see in Australia. Can you please update the one for WA as it’s not working anymore with the last iOS version for iPhone ? Thank you for your amazing work!🙏🏼

Great but could use more accessibility features

My four year old loves this app, but it would be even more amazing if the names and details could be included in audio for better self guided learning.

Very accurate

I love this app and use regularly. The sounds for the birds are so helpful. Recommend it highly.

Thank you Natural History Museums

I downloaded this app with low expectations, thinking it would be a light guide with few species. What a surprise to find most of the animals you are likely to see in the bush or shore are here, with all the essential information required for accurate, or at least approximate identification, and a description of the biology of the animal. This is a fantastic initiative and a gift to all residents and visitors to Australia. And there is one guide for every state and territory! Thank you Natural Museums of Australia.
