Android Bias
I’ve used this app on both iOS and Android, and I have a couple of things to say. While I love supporting my favorite tech tip providers, the iOS app is lacking in many features that are already available on Android and Web. For one, where is my Picture in Picture?? I use Picture in Picture in YouTube all the time, but I absolutely hate not having it on iOS. This is absolutely something that can be implemented (as it’s already on the Android app and Web), and even works when I use the web version on IOS.
I’d also like some of the search filtering and sorting features that you get on web on the app.
Aside from those things, I find the UI feels a bit more akin to the android UI style (which doesn’t bother me a ton, I just wish that it looked a bit more continuous with the iOS design language).
While I do love how easy this app is to use and how fast and snappy it is, I really am missing Picture in Picture. Hopefully this can get added soon.
Great but please add background playback!
Overall the UI is clean and the app is easy to use. It is a little rough around the edges but it’s functional. Just missing some key features like background playback.
No AirPlay is a dealbreaker
No AirPlay, no subscription. I consume nearly all of my YouTube content on my TV, so not being able to watch Floatplane content on my TV is a complete and total deal breaker for me. This combined with all of the missing features mentioned in other reviews is extremely disappointing, as a lot of the content on Floatplane looks really interesting and I’d like to subscribe. AirPlay, Picture in Picture, background play, etc are essential features whose absence enormously harm the usability of the app. As a developer I understand that iOS development (and development in general) can be challenging, but releasing without support for some of the most basic features on each platform you’re releasing on is borderline unacceptable. This is especially true when the lack of these basic features results in a drastic reduction in quality of life when using the app. I’ll still hold out hope that these issues will be addressed at some point, but the fact that the app has existed for so long without them makes me more cautious than optimistic. If these issues get addressed, the next major thing I would absolutely love is a native Apple TV app.
Just missing one thing
The app is amazing, but it would be really awesome to be able to play a video with my screen locked. That is my only complaint! I liked listening to the WAN show while at work when I had YouTube Premium
Great app!… But
The app is great it allows me to support my favorite creators. But the notifications don’t appear until you open the app. This has caused me to miss all of the streams my channels host And it’s driving me crazy because I signed up specifically for the streams and I don’t have a way to know when they happen.
Unable to sign in it says I need a enabled account
Ok
Great app, one kink that needs to be ironed out
I absolutely love this app but my one complaint is that i've been watching past streams on my pc, and it shows which streams i've watched on there but doesn't show the same stuff on my phone so when i'm on my phone i can't tell which ones iva already watched on my pc
Functions like it's from 2007
I've been using Floatplane since January 2022 and it still is barely passable as a functioning app. The notifications for streams/post send hours late, if at all. There are only 1-4 creators of note to choose from depending on your interests and all content is behind a paywall. They still don't have a block function for end users which is a function you'd think would be important for personal safety in general, especially on a platform that allows 13 year olds. The developers have come into livestreams and heckled and berated viewers when they asked about potentially adding certain functions to Floatplane, such as a dark mode; instead they recommend getting a third party plug in for most/many of these issues which of course doesn't solve the issue for mobile users whatsoever. I have personally sent emails to the Floatplane contact page about their lack of functions directly related to the safety of myself, the other viewers, as well as the content creators and still haven't seen some of the basic improvements come around. I'm talking basic as in moderators, delete comments, and a block as the most basic of safety measures. The app is beyond uncomfortable to use, it's clunky and works about half of the time, which is a frustration that's exasperated when you remember you're paying to see any of the content but end up fighting the app more than you can watch what you're there to see. I restart the app anytime I use it and even then you're lucky if it works correctly when you try to skip in a video. Even a year ago I was seeing improvements but it's just not enough. I abandonned the platform as a whole when another viewer, who I could not block, almost doxxed me and is now a moderator for the one creator I was there for. This is all on top of struggling to get the app to work and setting alarms through my phone to catch streams instead of relying on the actual FP notifications. Even if you're here for LTT I can't imagine the service or app being worth actively paying money for. I'll stick with mid roll ads on YouTube, thanks.
I like the videos… using app is questionable
I can’t see vids from more than 3 weeks ago in app…. Bug? Also it does this weird thing where it forces me to be in portrait sometimes… webpage is pretty good on mobile tho
Good, but needs PiP/background audio
After the last update I was really excited to try the app again. Everything about it seems to work pretty well, with 1 big exception; I can't get PiP playback to work. This means I can't do anything else on my phone while using the app, which is a huge negative and has made me go back to the website (which does support PiP).
