I don’t like anything about their new apps, and I’m more than happy to let my life keep running on this tried & true productivity suite—which I’ve been using for the better part of a decade. The price of the annual subscription used to seem a little dear to me—but shopping around now, I don’t know if there’s anything as close to the straightforward, nearly analogue experience that I love to love about these apps. They aren’t cluttered with monetization grabs and meaningless features—and I know exactly what I’m paying for. There’s been a steady refinement to all three of these complimentary apps over the years. Most have been discrete and genuinely useful, and I’ve generally come around to them, even if they annoy me at first. After all this time, working with all three apps is still a pleasure. Just not worth it. -- J tsuhany, 2024-05-30 ### *---- "Terrible drawing app. Crashes and draws strange shapes when I draw “too many lines”" I’m an artist, designer, work in the animation industry, I teach figurative art, draw obsessively, and had often enjoyed the quality of traditional moleskine sketchbooks (they were one of my go to brands). I draw/design professionally using wacom tablets and myriad drawing apps and programs. I really wanted to like this app, but when I’ve tried to do any real rendering(shading) on multiple pages within one file the app becomes unstable, crashes, and leaves random geometric grey and black shapes that appear and disappear while scrolling. Their app support was very responsive but told me I ‘scribbled’ too many lines. Then put me on beta testing which was even less reliable (which actually seems obvious now). Then I was told the files weren’t safe and was casually told I’d probably lose the work, and that I should use less lines - which to me seems crazy, a note taking and drawing app telling me to use less lines or my work is at risk. The idea of the infinite scroll is great, but I when I literally have to cut and paste screen grabs of my work in order to save the images from the destruction from program itself, it completely ruins the apps only unique function for artists. In my opinion this app hurts the Moleskine brand as a whole. The drawing tools are ‘okay’ but nothing special and the interface design is inefficient and looks like it prioritized not infringing on patents over efficiency and intuitive usability, which I could get used to if the app actually worked the way it should. Sketchbook pro is free, draws the same pencil textures and then some, and has far more options for brushes. Procreate, Adobe fresco - all vastly superior and easier to use, and don’t destroy your work or have limits on number of lines. -- ol'county, 2024-03-12 ### *---- "Deletes all my hard work!" I am an artist and a designer, and I have been using flow for a couple years now. I really liked this app, particularly for its wide range of colors, pen styles and easy to use design and layout. However, a couple months ago I was planning a large art piece (sketching and recording all of my measurements for an 8 foot quilt) when suddenly, I opened the app the next day, and my document had completely disappeared!! I am talking hours and hours of work GONE. I was so disheartened! 😭💔 Since then, I’ve had the same thing happen a few times when I know I didn’t delete them by accident. I’ve updated the app and this problem has continued to persist. Just now, I was working on a new sketch and when I re-opened the app 15 minutes later, I saw the document open and then disappear in front of me. Other apps can’t handle large amounts of notebooks and pages without freezing. I don’t own physical paper anymore now it’s great. Don’t listen to people complaining about the subscription. You could easily spend more on physical paper and pens. Plus it’s like 2 bucks. If your sick of subscriptions then maybe don’t subscribe to so many streaming services and instead subscribe to something that adds real value for a great price. As mentioned, I don’t own a single piece of paper anymore and it’s liberating.
