House flies are a common insect and are often considered a pest for their tendency to live near humans and carry diseases, hovering around food and trash as prime feeding grounds. But as any entomologist knows, these tiny insects are actually quite amazing!

Flies may be tiny but they can move quickly, flying at up to 5 miles per hour, which is quite fast when you consider the average human walks roughly 3 miles per hour! Did you know that the buzzing sound you hear when a fly is flying around your head is actually the sound of the fly’s wings beating 20 thousand times per minute? This rapid flapping of wings creates a steady humming sound as the fly moves. With four thousand lenses in each giant bug eye, flies have natural wide-angle vision. Houseflies don’t bite or sting, though their cousins such as horse flies or black flies can leave painful stings similar to bees or wasps.
