I like being able to scan a barcode and automatically add what I’m eating. I also like the idea of assigning food grades to products and being able to find similar options that may be healthier. However, there are several limitations that make these features difficult to fully utilize. First, the food database does not seem expansive enough to take full advantage of the barcode scanner. When you scan a product that is not already in the database, the app asks you to manually enter all of the nutritional information and take pictures of the product. Once you submit everything, it is sent for review with a message saying that it will be added to the database “soon.” The problem is that “soon” can become an indefinite amount of time. In my experience, some products either never seem to get approved or remain under review for an extremely long time. What makes this particularly frustrating is that the nutritional information I just spent time entering cannot even be used for my own tracking while the product is being reviewed. At that point, the alternative is to use the “Quick Calorie Log,” but that feature only allows you to enter calories. You cannot manually enter protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sodium, micronutrients, or any of the other nutritional information that you may want to track. Because the product is not in the database and the manual-entry option is so limited, there is essentially no way to accurately track that food. A simple solution would be to allow submitted products to immediately save as a personal or custom food while they are awaiting review. That way, the information the user already entered could still be used for personal tracking even before the product is approved for the public database. If the submission is eventually reviewed and approved, it could then become available to everyone. I also think the grading system could use additional transparency and refinement. At times, the grades seem extremely harsh or somewhat inconsistent. It would be helpful to have a clearer explanation of exactly why a product received its grade, with the grading criteria supported by scientific evidence. It might also be beneficial to allow grading to take a person’s dietary preferences or goals into consideration, such as keto, vegan, low-sodium, high-protein, or other dietary approaches. Most of what you try to scan just flat out doesn’t, or times it’ll tell me the scanning feature is locked behind a paywall. The search function is pretty bare bones as well, I can’t find most of the products you can commonly find in most grocery stores. I don’t appreciate being bombarded with popup ads at every tap, any time I need to change screens I know I’m going to have to close a popup ad asking me to upgrade, or trying to close an actual advertisement and am greeted with yet another popup to upgrade to a paid plan to remove ads. Overall, this app is just annoying to use.
