GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. is an app that enables users to learn more than 1,200 words essential for beginners.
This is the official iPhone app for the 3rd edition of GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 2 million copies sold worldwide.
Advantages
◆Users can view the words and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.
◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.
◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the study set, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.
Study methods and functions
This app has three main modes: Study, Check, and List.
◇ "Study" allows users to view the words, their meanings, and the example sentences over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・Audio recordings of all words and example sentences are provided with natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese. (Please set your iPhone to Ring mode to hear the audio playback.)
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Users can bookmark the words they like. The bookmarked words are compiled in the Bookmark list in "List."
◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・The words already mastered are taken out of the study set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.
◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order. The words bookmarked in the Study mode are also listed in the Bookmark list.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The Study view of words can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.

GENKI Vocab for 3rd Ed. Reviews

No sound

Mai-ku on

United States

Just like the title says, no sound. Not worth wasting your money on if you can’t hear the lessons.

Broken

hhsf butgjgcbjyfcbj on

United States

This app should be free because it is early beta quality. Apple used to not allow such broken apps to be sold. Fix the audio and include spaced repetition. Get it together. What a joke.

Sound not working

Please fix the sound issue for IPhone 🥲 I would love to use the app

Too many malicious bugs

lInkkkkky on

United States

If I'm memorizing words and there's no sound when I click on a word, what's the point of buying this app? I don't recommend it at all. The business doesn't care and doesn't fix the bugs.

Badly made

zyxksyu on

United States

I bought this app despite the low review because I’m studying with GENKI books. I thought it would be a good edition. I tried to use it but there is no sound at all (everywhere else there is, and sound is “On” in the app. I tried to reinstall and then it doesn’t work at all. It’s a waist of money.

Sound Works - Take Out of Silent Mode

YKB10 on

United States

I had the same issue of the sound not working with the Genki vocabulary app until I read a review that said in order for the audio to work, your phone cannot be in Silent Mode. I turned off silent mode and the playback audio totally worked! Same for the Genki Kanji app as well. Just make sure silent mode is turned off.

No ability to Review

IvanREOR on

United States

After you mark a word as “known” you have no ability to review it as a flashcard. You can only browse to it from a long list of all words… meaning you can’t practice and you’ll forget older lessons… the app is also a big buggy. Should honestly be a free app included with the books. Do yourself a favor and get Anki instead of this.

Better than making your own Anki

SkylineVR30 on

United States

This is app is good for what it does: a way for you to save time from making your own Anki or flash cards. Because honestly - if you made your own Anki, it’ll be the same vocab. This app at least saves you time from making the vocab that’s already on here. So if you save time studying or making an Anki deck without vocabs from here.

New Update Is Buggy (FIXED)

日本語の学生🇯🇵 on

United States

UPDATE: App no longer crashes when attempting to do Study or Check. Can no longer complete studies and checks as reaching the final card/word crashes the entire app.

Please fix the sound!!!!

Happy sad! on

The sound doesn’t work at all
