Zoom Text is great in Chrome, please support it in News
Have been using Google News since it launched as I used to find it useful to aggregate tailored news and found it fairly easy to filter out what I didn’t think was relevant. One particularly good feature was to see similar articles on a given subject which helps give a more holistic and grounded perspective, especially helpful given how far left and right the media leans these days. However, the quality and user experience has become borderline unusable. From articles with so many ads, pop ups and jank that they are either impossible to read or crash entirely. To others that simply don’t load at all. It should be noted that these are probably more of a criticism of the media outlet sites themselves rather than the Google News app but it frankly makes the app useless as a result. At very least I wish they’d allow some kind of ‘reader mode’ for articles so that they load consistently. As it is now though, will be deleting
No option to hide “types of stories”, not news sources. E.g. I’m tired of seeing stories like “someone got stabbed, killed, murdered”. Or the clickbait politics articles. Unless this is everything newsworthy what’s happening in the UK right now.
Side widget on the M4 iPad, cannot be deleted…
Used for years despite its many frustrations but eventually I’ve grown tired and uninstalled. Forces Chrome browser so ads galore - many articles just downright unreadable , resets frequently when you were just about to click into an article , and overall just throws far to much trash “journalism” at you no matter how often you try and customise it to your algorithm preferences.
My entire widget is 5/5 articles from news sites I don’t follow, on articles I’m not interested in, even ones from journals I’ve actively noted to the algorithm that I don’t want to see more of.
It’s a great app for reading news, but is plagued by bugs that the dev team just does not seem to care about (I can say that, because they have been around for over a year and I have reported them more than once) When you remove a news source from you feed or if you remove a saved story from your saved stories, a banner appears at the bottom saying “source removed” or “story removed”. The only button shown is “undo”. There is no dismiss button and no way to swipe the banner away. That would be ok if the banner went away after a few seconds, but it just lingers there day after day. Sometimes it’s just annoying, at other times it makes it impossible to read an article because it covers the accept and reject buttons of the cookie consent pages that sometimes pop up and cover the whole page. The only way to get rid of the banner is to force quit the news app. Way to go for user experience. As I said before, I reported this bug several times, but the Google News team either doesn’t care about user reviews and bug reports or doesn’t even bother reading them (which I guess is the same thing). It would take a developer about 10 minutes to add a “dismiss” button to that banner. Just do it.
Pity (advert)…
Crashy garbage
