This app provides realtime alerts and reporting from around the world on the emerging field of Gravitational Wave Astronomy. It allows one to filter on and receive notifications for event types of interest. I enjoy getting notifications every few days on some new event or observations. Especially fascinating are events involving neutron stars, since they are the most likely to have remnants that can be observed by other means. I have read practically every report by teams trying to correlate observations of neutron star events, and am always amazed by the different teams of astronomers working together to understand the nature of the universe. This app is perfect for anyone who wishes to experience real-time and understand this emerging field and technology better.
It’s hard to believe you can get instant notifications on gravitational wave events on your personal smartphone. That we can detect them at all is a miracle of modern science. I must admit however that much of the info presented in this app is technical and over my head, with numerous acronyms I don’t understand and technical data given that I cannot interpret. Thus, the app could be improved if there were significant descriptions and background info on GW events, the various detectors, the info presented, etc. Photos of the detectors for example and graphics would be super helpful. Thanks, B
Like distant continuous crackling thunder LIGO leves me in in stunned amazement of the immensity of the cosmos. Like any background radiation you keep thinking there could be a pattern and just get hypnotized by the static. As a kid in the 60s watching Trek, I never imagined that we would actually someday hear this. Still in Awe. ✨
It just amazes me that we can see the universe by way of gravity waves. Incredible technology adding to our knowledge and it’s great fun as well!
Would love to be able to playback the real sound and see the frequency wave
This is an excellent app. It gives you access to up to the minute information about gravity waves. I hope the folks in charge of the NANOGRAV experiment will make a similar app.
Great technology great data reports
That my iphone vibrates at the same time as astronomers around the world are being alerted is beyond cool. I use the app almost daily to check which detectors are on line. I also use the seismometers to monitor world wide earthquakes. LIGO has some of the best to know when the earth is quiet enough for gravity wave science. I think the communications on the app are mostly for professionals and simple questions will get referred to the excellent list of links. Sometimes a pro will answer questions not found in faqs, but it think it was not intended as a big public chat group. I thank the author for allowing the public a front row seat to the events and science going on.
As an amateur astrophysicist this app has brought the science of gravitational wave detection to me. The real time alerts are exciting and with the links to more information, along with the ability to chat with others within the app, I have learned so much. This app makes the cutting edge science tangible and first person. LIGO’s entire Open Science commitment is incredible.
