Ground News Reviews

A News feed for adults

Ground News is ground breaking. It helps cut through all of the chatter and nonsense out there and gives you the tools for learning a balanced view of the news agenda worldwide, and avoid what different sections of the media want you to think.

You get both perspectives and international and national news. The #1 news app on the globe without a doubt.

Good platform, terrible unsubscribe process

Jacques 213 on

United Kingdom

The platform has been effective at making it easier to read news regularly, which was what I wanted to do, and it was nice to have all the different news stories by different outlets compiled together, so that I could compare and consider the news I was getting. It made critical thinking easier, I would say. However, one thing I would say is that for a time, the BBC was labelled left-wing, which is very misrepresentative. They fixed it soon after I noticed though, which was good. However, when I tried to unsubscribe, I found the process very tricky and frustrating. At first, I had to go into the terms and conditions to find any mention of unsubscribing, then the only thing I could make sense of was that I should email them, so I did. I got a pretty prompt reply, but they didn’t unsubscribe me, they told me I had to go to the original place I’d signed up for ground news to unsubscribe. It didn’t tell me where this was. Eventually I found out I’d already cancelled my subscription and it was all a waste of my time. Not the end of the world. But it was ultimately a more frustrating process than it should have been. Something ground news could do to improve the site I think would be tackling the cookies that pop up every time you click on a new article. It can be hard to wade through different articles when you’re constantly confronted by accept and reject buttons, in my opinion. I actually don’t know if this is something ground news can do themselves or if it has to come from the news outlets, but I think it would make the user experience better. Thanks.

Entirely London centric

Yesemitesam on

United Kingdom

Review from UK. This isn’t really all that useful especially if you happen not to live in London. It seems entirely London centric and even after setting your location and asking for local news it makes little difference. I thought this might be different from all the other London based media but it’s not it’s utterly focussed on London and nowhere else. I won’t be using it.

Good foundation, visuals need work

The premise of this service is great, and the principal feature is well executed. It’s just boring to look at. The good: The app does a great job of summarising news articles from across the political spectrum and uses ai to write a summary neutralising bias. The sources are shown so you are able to link back to what has fed into the ai. The original articles can be read in a convenient Google translator browser in all their add filled glory. The bad: While the pro pricing tier filters by political bias. You could still be reading through smoke and mirrors. You can filter by factuality but you need to pay 5x as much (99p for pro, £4.99 per month for premium), this means that all you get with the pro tier is no better than what you get on TikTok and X, unless you stump for the higher tier. The ugly: The app is mostly grey squares with rounded corners. Tiny thumbnails too small to see the images add little to the aesthetics. As a visually stimulating app, it performs poorly and is quite boring. As someone who uses the BBC and Times apps, I find those far more stimulating and engaging.

US Bias is an issue

Chrizb65 on

United Kingdom

Ground news has many useful features. Language analysis and cultural awareness are not amongst them. It’s USA news bias is understandable, but not useful to me. It’s a good app, and lets you personalise and scan news quickly. But the blind spot feature is useless outside the USA. Also by evaluating bias by publication, rather than article, major errors can occur. Still better than many others though.
