This is the best app I've found for increasing my code accuracy and helping to increase my speed. Five Stars!

Ham Morse allows you to practice morse code on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. It is designed particularly for Ham radio operators and others who wish to achieve or maintain a high level of proficiency in this classic mode of communication.

Ham morse has the following features:

The code is sent using the Farnsworth timing whereby the morse characters are sent at 15 words per minute (WPM) and then extra spacing is added to slow the overall WPM to speeds slower than 15 WPM. The farnsworth speed can be adjusted if you wish to use a speed other than 15WPM. The maximum speed that the morse can be sent at is 50 words per minute. The morse audio waveforms have a 5ms rise time to reduce key clicks and yet provide crisp code to copy.

The audio frequency can be varied from 220Hz up to 900Hz. A typical value might be around 700Hz but a lower tone can be very useful in some situations.

The code can be paused just in case you are interrupted or want to take a break, an incoming call on an iPhone pauses the code automatically.

To help you learn the morse code itself HamMorse allows you to practice a variety of sets of characters from individual random letters all the way to the current news stories from around the world.

Koch - This setting uses the Koch character progression. It starts with just one letter and then you can add a new letter when you have mastered the previous character set. This is one of the most popular methods of learning the morse character set.

Letters - Practice the individual letters, A-Z. Add new letters to your practice set using the settings page.

Numbers - Practice the numbers, 0-9. Which numbers you practice can be controlled on the settings page.

Callsigns - allows you to practice receiving random amateur radio callsigns, a mixture of letters and numbers (eg AA9PW, G1SNT, G5RV) that often prove troublesome when copying code on the air. HamMorse creates a wide variety of international callsigns using the standard ITU prefixes to provide useful practice where ever in the world you may be.

Punctuation - provides a wide variety of punctuation and standard morse code prosigns.

Top 100 and 500 most common words - this is a great way to start to recognize whole words the key to really improving your speed.

News feeds - these provide the opportunity to copy real sentences and keep up with the news at the same time. Note that the News feeds will only work with an active network connection.

Ham QSOs - listen to examples of typical on-air exchanges between ham radio operators - practice coping the callsigns, RST reports, location, rig, antenna and many other pieces of a typical QSO.

Accessibility support - The app also has support for Apple's accessibility tool, Voice Over. When Voice Over is activated each button and field has an audible description available describing the button or slider and its use.

Text Delay - As an additional learning aid You can have the text appear a few seconds after the morse code is played so you have time to copy the letter before it appears on screen.

Text Filter - Filter out characters from the News feeds or QSOs that you are not yet familiar with so you can start practicing with real text even if you don't yet know the whole morse character set.

Great App

Wil7013 on

It’s perfect from what I can tell in the features, had an issue with the app, developer responded same day fast, was more of a me issue, then an app issue, if your looking for a Morse code app, select this one. it’s worth the small amount of money, will recommend it, when someone is looking for an app. Tons of resources out there, but this is perfect for my needs

Love it! (but has a tiny bug)

Beavertonian on

I love this app. After many ham-inactive years it helped me get my pencil copy from ~12 wpm to 20 wpm. It also helped me fill in some gaps in the punctuation marks. That worked really great. I could turn on just the ones that needed work. Since then I have been working on head copy. It has proved a struggle. I alternate between Morse Code Ninja podcasts at 28 wpm and Ham Morse in QSO mode at 20 wpm. QSO mode is great, too; very realistic. I wish I could set Ham Morse to keep sending when the app is “asleep”, i.e. when the app screen is not displayed. Downcast will do this for podcast listening. It saves battery drain and makes the app immune to inadvertent screen touches. The bug: In Punctuation mode the app will not play the double quote: “ I have tried it with other punctuation marks, and with just the double quote selected. The “ marks show up in the text display, but you don’t hear them. Devices: iPhone 13, iOS 16.4; iPhone 6S, iOS 15.7.3; iPad Pro 10.5, iPad OS 16.3.1

What happened?

Celluloid Hero on

July 16, 2022 Update. Bug apparently squashed. As per my review ten years ago, although not perfect, this is still the best CW training app available. As I stated in my previous review, I would like to see more emphasis placed on the new characters a person is learning in the CW trainer and les repetition of the characters one has already mastered in previous training sessions. I particularly love the RSS feed feature. I see that in the current version there are now only 10 feeds. I would appreciate it if more could be added at your convenience. Thank you for your quick response and communication in fixing this bug in the latest update. ———————————— Just downloaded the new version on 07-08-2022. Now it just opens and closes while still showing it is running in the background. Deleted app and reinstalled without effect. Used this app for many years. Please fix. TNX

Highly Recommend!!!

Sprout's Dad on

Excellent tool for learning Morse the correct way. I have no complaints or issues what so ever. The app is highly adjustable to your own personal needs. Tone, character WPM and total words per minute rate. You can choose to focus on just letters, numbers, punctuation, or ProSigns, etc. Be sure to read “So You Want To Learn Morse Code” by N1IRZ in the settings tab FIRST! It discusses the Koch method, which is the heart of learning the code. Highly recommend Ham Morse!!!

Great app!

Lync512 on

I’m using this to finally learn Morse and I am enjoying it! It’s perfect for what I need! Only slight gripe is it doesn’t appear updated to support the larger iPhone screen models. But its not a deal breaker for me. Thank you for making this app! 73!

I love this program

F2959 on

Have had it from day one, great way to learn code.

Excellent! But…

KBKinfinity on

This is a great Morse training app. It has most anything you need to learn and practice code. But it has one problem. The word spacing seems to be the same as the character spacing. It should be a bit over twice that long - seven dits. Thanks for the app!

Started working again

Cancel my previous review comment. It has begun working.

Insufficient Speed Adjustment

Zeppilen on

Simon, I really like most wverything about your app, but cannot find any way to adjust the PER CHARACTER speed! I have read, and agree, that each character should be sent quite fast so that the learner is forced to copy/translate based on sound alone (no mental picturing of the di-dah sequence). Then the learner can asjust learning speed by only adjusting the INTER-CHARACTER speed (spacing between characters). If the app HAS that feature... I cannot find it. Also... no matter what I set the "char speed" to... i get the same... about 13 wpm. I had this app about three years ago and was able to change speed. Not sure why I cannot anymore. BTW... I'm using this on an iPhone12.

Perfect for me

Michael W. Perry on

This is just what I was looking for to improve my rusty CW skills. Very versatile and useful. Unlike some I have not had issues with sound. Apple may have changed something in iOS. The developer might add a few tweaks and recompile with the latest tools. That should make them go away.
