Like its predecessor, Human Japanese Intermediate is built on the idea that the best way to learn and truly comprehend Japanese is to have it explained by someone who speaks your language. Core concepts are explained in a friendly, down-to-earth tone, with frequent comparisons to similar aspects of English. With humor and warmth, it demystifies and illuminates the real nuts-and-bolts of the language--not just vocabulary and canned phrases like many other products.

Explanations come alive with deeply interwoven interactive example sentences--more than 2600 in total--so that you can immediately see and hear exactly what you're learning.

Stay on track with an exciting new patent-pending feature called INGREDIENTS™ example sentence breakdowns. Next to every sentence is an icon that provides an instantaneous, simultaneous lookup of every word in the sentence, even conjugated forms! That means you'll never lose your flow in the middle of an interesting discussion just because you've momentarily forgotten the meaning of a word.

KANJI
Human Japanese Intermediate also gets into kanji in a big way. At the end of most chapters, a new batch of kanji is introduced, with animations of each character, plus example sentences, illustrations, writing tips, and more. Our goal is not to simply throw a bag of characters in your lap, but to carefully explain how everything works.

To this end, Human Japanese Intermediate keeps track of which kanji you've learned at what point in the text and automatically adjusts the "spelling" of words in example sentences as appropriate to your current knowledge. So early on, you might encounter the following sentence:

そのひとの　なまえを　しらない。

But later, after you've met several of kanji used in these words, the version you would see is:

その人の　名前を　知らない。

This approach removes the most overwhelming aspect of learning kanji--the fact that most sentences contain many characters you don't yet know--and that helps you to stay focused and energized.

QUIZZES
Stay sharp with five different kinds of quizzes: chapter reviews, vocab, conjugation, kanji stroke order, and kanji flashcard.

Quizzes keep track of which questions you get right and wrong, to help you concentrate on your trouble spots.

And when you get a question wrong, it's not simply "Try again." Wherever possible, the quiz provides a hint that is specific to that question, to help you remember and learn.

I tried a lot of Japanese learning apps and this is easily the best. It is just so packed with useful extras. You can spend a lot of time going over the dozens of chapters, and when you’re done you really will have a better understanding of the language. Combine this with Midori for vocab and you will have powerful and useful tools for Japanese self-study. Human Japanese is also a very high quality, well-designed app and worth every penny.

Sometimes the pages are in the wrong order from another chapter.
The swiping feels nonnative and doesn’t always work.

Having started learning Japanese late in life, I find Human Japanese to be better than any of the popular textbooks used to teach the language in America. I’ve used Genki, Japanese for Busy People, and Minna no Nihongo at various schools. After buying Human Japanese Intermediate for a quick review, I wished I had begun here. The explanations clarify grammatical and usage issues far better than any of the aforementioned texts. And best of all, the approach seems more pragmatic, with immediate online feedback, practice, and participation. Coupled with the affiliated Satori Reader, I think this is the best self-directed learning experience available, and is probably more useful than all the time I’ve spent in language classes!

This app was by far the best resource I have used for learning Japanese and I have tried a lot of different books, apps, and online sources. I took a year of college JPN so I had some of the basics down but was still really struggling for the years after to improve. I tried many different books but found them either too hard for my level or completely un-engaging. After hearing about this app from Chris Broad on hit YouTube channel Abroad in Japan speak very highly of this app I downloaded it.

I was immediately in love with it as it goes in to many nuanced questions I had when first learning Japanese. The level if detail and clarity this app portrays is like no other if you are at all interested in learning Japanese don’t think buy both the beginner and intermediate app it will provide you with plenty of reading time and a great many lessons in Japanese that would normally cost you 10x or more to get elsewhere!!!

Such an immersive way of learning with the writer using conversational ways of teaching you how to learn Japanese. I have been using this app for over five years and it is worth every penny. Sure, there are things that this app might not teach you, but it has so many fundamental teaching points whether it’s the beginner app or the intermediate one. The audio portion of this is easy to understand and the breakdown of sentences (the icon of a notepad) are so helpful. All in all, I absolutely treasure this app as an avid Japanese learner. I started with the beginner version and moved to the intermediate.  The progression is natural as it builds the vocabulary, grammar and kanji.  My only suggestion would be the use of animation along with sound (sound is included already) in the dialogue examples.  Highly recommend it to those who want to learn Japanese at their own pace!
