Hands Down, Best note, markdown, and personal app available
It suits my workflow of building ideas and thoughts over time, with none of the immediate burden of being forced to classify everything you do. It can connect to any storage, it can export to many media web formats, it’s perfect for mark down, it can cope with more notes than Apple Notes can, has a preview mode, and one of the best word highlighting tools I’ve ever come across to support my writing tone. The hash-tagging of notes as a way of noting themes is especially useful in bringing together scraps here and there, just tag it after. Can be as simple or as complex as you like. If you use take notes for projects or for assignments or for building text over time or Markdown often, this is the one you should get.
Honestly, I’ve been using this for years. And I’ve tried many others similar products, but they just want to tell you how to use it their way. iA Writer doesn’t presume to know what you, as an individual want, it just gives you the tools as you see fit to use them. It’s really refreshing, and unfortunately seldom seen in this app market.
By far the best
Fast, reliable, and very helpful. It practically disappears to let you work when you switch to full screen. If you suffer from poor concentration (and who isn’t?), try this. It is as close to Zen on screen as it can get.
Amazing
An awesome writing app. It always has been. But it keeps getting better.
Keeps crashing and is buggy
For some reason, this app just crashes upon opening all the time. This has been happening for years with DIFFERENT PHONES, so it has nothing to do with reinstalling or resetting or whatever. I have had so many bugs with this app on my devices that I just don’t understand how it’s so popular. It’s be great without the bugs, but I can rarely open the app
Best writing app ever!
Over the years I tried many different apps for writing, journaling, notes and study. This app is perfectly fulfilling my needs.
I’m recommending it to all my friends.
These days is rare to find a note taking app that is an open source, one time purchase and allows you to own your data.
I wish I could meet the people who created this app. I’m fascinated by your work !
Simply brilliant
Best-in-category without a shadow of doubt, and I have tried them all. Ulysses in particular is a joke, having abolished the tab indent for new pars. I have no hesitating in recommending iA Writer.
Disagree with deprioritising select/copy
I think it was a poor design decision to deprioritise showing select/select all/copy in favour of the newer paste/paste as combo feature. When I tap and hold over text, I can’t just activate select anymore on my iPhone.
Select-copy-paste are literally some of the most used functions in any text/writer app… what kind of designer would hide these and make them less accessible?
Outline mode would be nice

UPDATE: Still using it a year later. I like that I can have a library structure with all the individual files available in Finder, rather than locked away in a database. Custom order bothers me less, as I now use a file naming system that gets around it. A shame the dynamic outlining that’s available in the Windows version is not on iOS or macOS. I’m not sure why there has to be feature disparity between different operating systems for a fairly simple text editor. I think Windows doesn’t have wikilinks whereas the Mac does. Only a small complaint. I hope outlining comes to macOS and iOS soon.

Very nice app, but as far as I can tell, there’s no way to arrange text files by dragging and dropping them in a custom order like Ulysses. Would certainly be useful to have something like that. Update: Been using it for a few weeks now. I initially gave it three stars, but that was a bit stingy, so I’ve added an extra star!
The best app
The best app on the market. Simple, clean and stylish. IA writer is setting a new standard how an note taking app should be. I especially appreciate the export options and the fact that I own my data! Option of buying the app instead of subscription is another thing I appreciate.
A brilliant tool for writing
I use IA Writer every day. It is my first tool for writing anything. I like the syntax highlights and the clean interface.
