These are insanely simple things that the app just cannot seem to grasp. Deleted -- JayAntone, 2025-06-27 ### **--- "A long way to go" The app is much better than it used to be, and it can be a joy to use for basic article reading, but it still leaves a lot to be desired with some HUGE problems I can’t believe persist after the app has been out for so long. I’m writing this review because I love IGN and hope this might lead to some much-needed improvements in their app, which somehow still pales in comparison to the old app. THE GOOD:
The news feed is great, and I love how it greys out the thumbnail for any article you read. It’s also fantastic to be able to click into an article, click back, and return to the main news feed at the same spot you left off (often not the case on IGN.com on iOS Safari, which regularly refreshes when you return to the main feed). THE BAD: First of all, I cannot fathom how this is possible, but when you’re reading an article, if the article has an image gallery, for some insane reason, when you click the gallery to look at each of the images fullscreen, you can only look at the widescreen video game stills in portrait orientation, meaning they take up a tiny fraction of the screen and you can barely see them. Try zooming in? Can’t do it. Try rotating your phone so you can, you know, actually see the image filling your phone screen at the proper aspect ratio? Can’t do it. Why on earth they don’t let you rotate photos is just mind-boggling to me, especially because you can’t do it on the iOS Safari site either! That site lets you rotate to landscape, but the IGN site interface takes up so much of the screen that it’s unusable (and has been for many years at this point). It’s MADDENING that, between the Safari site and the official IGN app, there is literally no way to look at widescreen video game stills on your phone in widescreen. Next, it is similarly impossible to believe that, when you use the “search” function to look up a game, the resulting game page displays that game’s score (with bizarrely little padding for the old decimal-based scores) but features no way to go straight to the game’s review. No link, no clickable icon. For some reason there is a big button that says “VIEW ON IGN.COM” but if you want to stay *in the app built by IGN*, for some godforsaken reason you have to scroll through dozens of articles and videos and eventually just stumble upon the game’s review. Speaking of videos, it is deeply frustrating that, for some reason, the app’s video player does not feature a quality control for videos. I haven’t been able to comment on an article in months and months. It just wants me to log in even though I am logged in. It just logged me out, so I had to log back in, do THREE DIFFERENT CAPTCHAS and THEN do two factor authentication. And guess what? After all that I STILL can’t freaking comment on anything because it thinks I’m not logged in. Unbelievable. I’ve made like 4 different accounts and it’s just a broken app. Fix your app and stop trying to sell us stuff nonstop. If you’re making that much money from all these articles about armchairs headphones and Pokémon cards and garbage then you should have enough to fix your app so people can actually engage with the content. I’ve literally seen users in comment sections with names like “I can’t sign in” and “fix your app” because that’s how bad it is. People making new accounts with names like that trying to get IGN to actually do something with their app for once. Reviews are almost always unsubstantiated or biased due to third party interference, or unrelated personal or social drives that twist the sentiment of the truth pertaining to the review, and more often than not, those writing the review don’t have the baseline game sense or experience to justify their review, especially when that review seems to suggest absolutes when it comes to a games integrity. One of my primary concerns is towards the lack of recorded evidence that an individual has the competence to maintain an organized review of a piece of media, especially considering that, when competitive games are concerned, the reviewer may call to certain buffs or nerfs to mechanics, despite being in the absolute bottom of the competitive league. I don’t need a bronze overwatch player defining how diamond players should play the game, as how I don’t need a plumber to find the cure to cancer. Also, ragebaiting is a huge issue that you lot actively endorse by promoting articles written on false principle of stirring controversy, not to mention the companies IGN purchased and liquidated to remove competition, victimizing families in the efforts to monopolize media outlets pertaining to gaming. -- BungusBoRungus, 2025-03-25 ### *---- "IGN’s Face Off App!" As others have pointed out, the app also lacks a ton of features. I put this in the category of an app that doesn’t need to exist. Heck, even Musk himself is blowing his dog whistle and pointing it at IGN game journalists. What’s most interesting is that historically, those groups and individuals are the same people who hate-watch your content and decry things like DEI or basic human decency. Most people, including the majority of your hosts and writers, have abandoned Twitter. But all those hoards of former gamer gaters sure do love it. If you work at IGN and you willingly participate in corporate mandated rationalizations of Twitter integrations, what does that say about you as a human? All I wanted to do was rate a game and the app doesn’t even have that capability. There is a button that you can click that says “View on IGN.com” and when you click it, it takes you nowhere. It is somewhat smooth hence why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. All you can do on here is read articles, chat with AI and vote in a Spider-Man Suit poll.
