This application is a multilingual Japanese dictionary that does not require an internet connection.
Imiwa? was created using the amazing JMdict files from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group based on the work of Jim Breen on the EDICT project.
While some definitions are available in 4 languages (English, French, Russian and German), only the English translation is guaranteed for all entries in the JMDict dictionary. Initiate a search in any of those 4 languages, in Japanese or in romaji and imiwa? will do the rest.
imiwa? Also includes a rich database of kanji (KanjiDic), examples (from tatoeba.org) and conjugations as well as tools suitable for beginners.
Use the Traditional Chinese character recognition keyboard included in the iOS system for drawing kanji on screen.

Best free Japanese study app available
I studied Japanese and passed N2, and this app has been an integral part of my study from early on, and I still use the app today after all these years.
The auto-lookup from the clipboard and searching every word is juuuust 👌
I actually “looked” throughout the app for a way to pay the developers money.
So developer, please add a way for people to make donations so grateful folks like myself can do so :)
Really does everything you want, some UI issues
When you paste in text, it comes up with a message saying where you pasted it from - there’s no need for that.
Would be nice if it were easier to turn saved vocab lists into flashcards.
Fantastic app
This is a really fantastic app. I use it every day as I improve my Japanese reading ability, and in particular, I use it on my iPad to quickly lookup words. I love the auto read feature from my clipboard, as it saves having to type in or manually paste what I want to look up.
It seems clear that this app isn't going to be continued to be maintained, as it was last updated two years ago, however if there is any possibility, one feature request which would make my life so much easier would be for the app to have support for keyboard shortcuts. In particular, CMD + F to open up the search box would be absolutely ace!
One thing♥
I love it and it helps me a bit but theres a small problem. I don't speak Japanese and i want to, but there's no pronounciation for the words. I can't see any pronounciation. I think you can add the pronounciation in the dictionary and stuff. But fortunately i have the Hiragana japanese thing but UNFORTUNATLEY i'm not really used to it and i cant be bothered looking through it the whole time. So i hope you can add some pronounciation!!
Helps family communication
I have a Japanese family from my wife’s side. We use LINE to chat and being able to just copy any message to the clipboard and have it automatically translated as soon as I open Imiwa is a godsend 🙏
Absolutely recommend!
Free, easy to use, lots of words search from English or Japanese. Display ways to draw Japanese Kanji as well. Love it!
Uses too much storage
This stupid app uses too much storage and doesn’t help me WHATSOEVER
Pretty good but...
On iPadOS 13, 11 inch the settings menu starts halfway down and isnt able to scroll up or down, or exit it so need to restart the app.
Also means I can’t turn off the other languages that I don’t use (French,Italian,German) so the interface is messy.
Otherwise a solid app.
Extremely grateful for this app
If something comes up after a search listing “giant upright elephant ear plant”, clearly this is a very thorough dictionary. Its interface is extremely convenient, and it allows great analysis of text by auto clip-board lookup. I love being able to make my favourites lists too. Has been a huge aid in my study of Japanese. All of this and it’s offline... I would pay good dollar for this! Thank you
I love this app but in this recent version the auto copied text lookup happens every time you return to the app, not just one time. It’s quite distracting...
