Description

‘Jammed with information about the workings and history of a long list of inventions...bring[s] complex ideas alive in an interactive and modern way.’
– The New York Times

“...a marvellous, marvellous app.”
– The Guardian

Pick up and play with some of the most extraordinary objects in the history of science and technology. This app brings to life priceless objects from the Science Museum in London and tells their stories.

With Journeys of Invention you can study, rotate and even operate some of the most revolutionary scientific inventions of all time. Step inside the Apollo 10 Command Module, examine a flea with Robert Hooke’s 17th-century microscope, explore the Large Hadron Collider, or even encode a secret message with a World War II Enigma Machine and share it with your friends to decipher. The app features original and insightful history specially written by Science Museum curators with a rich collection of historic photographs, rarely seen contemporary artworks, archive film footage and video.

This spectacular collection of museum gems is presented in a spell-binding interactive network of inventions, making it effortless to journey back and forth through time. Learn about the darker side of science on the ‘Dangerous’ journey. Choose ‘Horizons’ for dramatic tales of exploration. For a different take on the history of science and technology, try ‘Atoms and Rays’ or ‘The Secret of Life’.

Created by experts from the Science Museum in partnership with RGB (the wizards behind acclaimed apps The Elements and Solar System), Journeys of Invention is a wonderful guide for anyone with an interest in science, technology and discovery.

Reviews:

“Writing as someone who has a visual impairment, I have always found myself removed from museum exhibits which are often behind glass and too small/detailed to appreciate from afar. As ever, RGB has used the glass to bring these items closer. Brilliant work!” User review

“...an app for families to share and spend quality time with.” iPad Insight

“Journeys of Invention is a great interactive learning tool that is beautifully designed” Mac Life

Simulations

AwesomeAbbey 212 on

Hi, so most of the simulations don’t work on my iPad gen 9, they get cut off and I can’t see half of the screen! Other then that the app is great, if you fix that tiny problem then it would be 5 stars

Type Overlaps

Phil111 on

I had great hopes for this very interesting topic. Unfortunately on my iPad Pro 11”, lines of type overlap on most of the text pages, making it very frustrating to try to read. Developer should fix this to make it a good ap.

Amazing!!!

opgamer1000000 on

This game is entertaining and educational at the same time😎🏫 great idea a little expensive but still cool just I think you could either make it more interactive or you could add more inventions!!

Disappointingly shallow

Andy Baird on

As always with Touch Press, the implementation is polished, with some clever interactive bits (e.g., a focusable simulation of Hooke's microscope). Unfortunately, the content is lacking in depth. For example, the entry on "Human Wart Virus" mentions the use of an electron microscope--a key invention in many fields of science--but fails to say anything about how it works. Similarly, the entry "Air Pump" shows an early version and describes its use in killing animals, but fails to say anything about how the pump operates. This app might pique the interest of a youngster, but he or she wouldn't learn much from it--it's more eye candy than enlightenment.

Amazing science museum on an a iPad!

FlyingSinger on

This is a fabulous app for interactively exploring the history and workings of science and technology! It's a shame that the app was apparently introduced as "free" with in-app purchases. It must have really been just a very limited demo, requiring a purchase to unlock the full feature set. Such a preview is not a bad business model, but judging from the many one star reviews, people thought there should be more in the free version. Maybe some thought it was a game too -- it's not, but it is a lot of fun! If you have ever enjoyed visiting a science museum, you will love this app. It's like one of those DK science books with amazing photos, but at $10, much cheaper and full of interactive and multimedia content. One of the best uses of iPad I have seen.

Annoying

Alex_К on

$10, it should be free, it is not fun to not experience all these gadgets, I got bored 2 minutes after I downloaded the game, a waste of money

Upgrade upgrade upgrade

Mr.BairdMR on

All it does is tell you to upgrade. Annoying, poor marketing. Doesn't even give you a taste first

Don't appreciate the trickery

Ybotherxxx on

Just a very brief trial before being asked for $10. HATE this tactic. App is nice visually but really? For $10 bucks it better be able to do dishes and babysit my kids. Delete.

Marketing gimmick

GGinQCA on

Downloaded the app. Nice picture that's why I give it one star! It is a teaser for you to purchase the full applications. I wouldn't waste my time. Already deleted!

Good idea poorly executed

KauaiKid on

This seemed like it would be interesting but was lacking in any detail about the objects in their description and history. You can only look at a few items then the $9.99 nag screen appears. Deleted it.
