Knot IQ - The Bear Essentials

I have had several knot apps an sites that I’ve used and this one is hands down the best. The only thing better than the app is “Our Friend” DJ’s knot tying instructional videos. Follow his YouTube channel for some amazing tutorials full of great information presented in an entertaining and easy to follow format. The Family Sharing option is great, but my wife and I both purchased the app separately to support this this amazing knot reference. Thanks DJ and The Bear Essentials. I can’t wait to see how more will be added to this as it grows!

I’m on the hunt for a reliable way to learn knots offline. Knot IQ seems like a great fit. I noticed that the setup took a bit longer than expected, but that might just be me. The animations are great to visualize exactly what the instruction is teaching.

[Keeping review but adding stars after dev response] I’m sorry for the negative review. I want this app to succeed. I bought it to support the creator. Pros: The actual content and interactive 3D renderings and animations are VERY cool and immensely useful in understanding the structure of knots. Better than Grog’s gifs (is that blasphemy?). Cons: 1. Bro. 2.7GB?? I was surprised by the small download at first but then on launch it became my largest app BY FAR. It would be nice to have offline mode be opt in. Or even download knots individually. I don’t want this behemoth on my phone. 2. I would really prefer native UI. The Unity UI feels old, cheap, and unresponsive.

I’ve never been able to master knots from books or pictures. The animations are so helpful! This is a great app DJ, can’t wait to watch it grow :)

Don’t be discouraged by the download process. Just turn off your screen’s auto lock feature for the download and turn it back on after. It took my phone about 45 min to download the app, but now it’s installed for offline use when I’m out in the mountains and really need some knots. The animations are ELITE! You can pause, rotate in 3 dimensions, speed them up, slow them down, slide the progression tab so you see them tied in reverse if you want. There has never been a better way to visualize how to tie a knot. Being a knot, hitch, and bend junkie, I love the look on people’s faces when you transform a rope into a multitool. You’ll hear phrases like “How the heck did you do that” and “Wait, show me that again”. Knots are so useful There are a few bugs to work out with the app, but I’m confident they’ll be fixed. I’ve learned that patience is worth it.

Downloaded this app and had a little trouble getting it to finish the extract, but redownloading it seemed to do the trick. What an incredible wealth of knowledge at your fingertips! Every conceivable knot for every scenario and activity. The animations are really neat and show you graphically and in an easy to replicate fashion how to tie each knot. Well done, Bear Essentials Outdoors!

Full of bugs — eg it arbitrarily doesn’t play (pressing play button doesn’t “play” the animation), the UI is buggy and confusing, many times when I click a knot it just doesn’t open. Quite frustrating when you’re actually trying to use it live — I’m instead opting to just google the knot and follow pics

All the issues other people have commented on have already been fixed. I can’t believe the level of detail included in this app - the ability to zoom in and change the speed with slight variations in color makes it easy to follow along and has already significantly improved my camping game! I really appreciate the blog posts that go into more detail about each knot and what it could be used for. I can’t wait for more videos showing additional demonstrations. Very impressive!!

Love the website. links are working & linking to respective sites at YouTube channel. However, knots are not loading. After my review DJ responded with the fix and all is up and running. Thanks!

I keep waiting for the asset download to finish, and once it does, any knot I try to look at says “Knot Unavailable “. So far, the app has been useless. I have tried deleting and reinstalling. Hasn’t worked yet.
