Basically quit FL studio after years of using it when I picked up Koala. It’s a super capable sampler and a real contender in the DAW/ sampler market. Lots of amazing features, FX, ease of use make this a must have for any producer.
The ONLY thing that would make this 5 stars for me is being able to import MIDI files!! Hopefully they can make this a feature in a future update 🙏
If these guys ever come out w a standalone it will wipe the market . Best music making app ever - especially for drummers !! Its just fun and lets you do what your brain wants to do sound design wise. Bit of experience with a daw helps but hands down most fun way to make tunes or at the very least score your idea down b4 the magic drops.
This app made me sold my SP404. I can create beats on commute to work now. This app is insane!
Koala is everything a person could want in a sampler, its beauty is in its simplicity and each update is like a little Christmas present from Marek. It keeps getting better every time I open it
This thing is insane. Just buy it. With that out of the way I’ll list some pros and cons as a person who has made music on an iPhone for 12 years… Pros: Incredibly well thought out and designed Insane features even my full fledged daw doesn’t have such as stem splitting. Easy to add massive amounts of samples and build kits in seconds (I transfer sample packs as a zipped file into iZip through iTunes then unzip them and point koala to that unzipped folder) Things such as the backgrounds bring so much to the experience. So freaking cool. Limitless creative opportunities. Workflow unmatched. The new sequence snapping feature set to off is utterly insane. Being able to have a bunch of varyingly unhinged patterns and just instantly add flare or calm things down as you see fit is the most fun I’ve had arranging a track since birth it’s so damn good. Only issue is that long samples triggered at the start of the sequence don’t play if you switch over halfway through but cammmmman. It’s sick. Cons: INABILITY TO UNDO A RECORDING IN ONE TAP. When I’m trying to record unquantized drums in one take, I literally have to mess up for the 50th time, pause, hold clear, tap every drum I hit, record, mess up and repeat. It destroys what is otherwise a PERFECT workflow. Bad style of piano for iphone. Imo the best all time piano on a phone was the one in iMaschine 1 where you were unable to slide to other notes. This allowed some insane thumb gymnastics that enabled me to do note glides and play extremely complex and expressive things. I was able to tap a note and hold/slide my finger to the next note, releasing and tapping to trigger it. I can’t stress enough how much I wish this was in koala (as well as a two octave vertical stack style keyboard). I’m not a huge fan of most of the effects, unfortunately they frequently result in sibilant or resonant sounding audio (the filter is too resonant and stuff) but I’m really digging in on that. I’d love to see a soft clipper in that list. The dials for pitch volume and pan etc are overly sensitive on iPhone. I know you can move left or right to fine tune but in the vertical axis the range of motion from -12 to +12 is WAY too small, when it could be much larger. Final thing, having to copy a sample and delete it to move it is annoying. Also have to select swap EVERY time when moving samples around is extremely annoying when trying to organize a million unlabelled chops. I know I was really critical but that
At first I didn’t use the app despite rave reviews from friends. I was on a plane ride with nothing to do opened up and made 3 ideas quickly learning how to use it. I’ve played with my niece and nephew with it and everyone loves it’s simple and fun interface. Thank you
So easy, fun and very nicely designed. Everything you need in a sampler is there!
This app when it comes to music production is really handy to have on you. Being able to export individual sequences into stems with ease especially on a iOS/iPadOS is amazing to have in ur toolbox. It is flawed with some features that are missing and make it more difficult to get around but overall this app is great to have on you nonetheless.
Absolutely amazing, you can be endlessly creative with it!
