## ABCDE methode Description
De ABCDE-methode is een werkwijze waarbij hulp wordt verleend met het principe "treat first what kills first". Met andere woorden: eerst de primaire (levensbedreigende) en vervolgens de secundaire c.q. tertiaire (niet-direct c.q. niet-levensbedreigende) letsels en stoornissen. Deze handelwijze heeft belangrijke voordelen omdat - naast een duidelijke houvast - door het volgen van deze methodiek (bijna) alle letsels en stoornissen ermee kunnen worden onderkend en behandeld.

De ABCDE-methodiek werd in 1976 ontwikkeld in de Verenigde Staten in het kader van de Advanced Trauma Life Support-cursus en wordt tegenwoordig wereldwijd door zowel leken als professionele hulpverleners toegepast.

In de ABCDE wordt achtereenvolgens gekeken naar:

Airway: de luchtwegen en de nekwervelkolom
Breathing: de ademhaling en de ventilatie
Circulation: actief bloedverlies en de circulatie
Disability: het bewustzijn en de neurologische functies
Exposure: de lichaamstemperatuur en het verdere onderzoek: Secondary survey

Waarom een vaste methodiek voor de EHBO?
Eerste Hulpverleners bouwen doorgaans weinig ervaring op met slachtoffers die ernstig gewond zijn of plotseling ernstig ziek zijn. Hierdoor treedt in deze situaties vaak veel stress op en raakt men even kwijt wat te doen. De ABCDE-methodiek biedt in die situatie houvast. Volgens een vast stramien worden een aantal punten nagelopen en men kan, als men het even niet meer weet, terugvallen op de methodiek. 
De kans dat ernstige letsels gemist worden is kleiner en men zal deze letsels in de juiste volgorde behandelen doordat de methodiek is gebaseerd op het "treat first what kills first" principe. Daarnaast wordt de methodiek wereldwijd gebruikt en ontstaat er dus een eenduidige hulpverlening, waar de professionele hulpverlener snel de hulpverlening over kan nemen van de EHBO'er en er snel informatie uitgewisseld kan worden over de situatie van het slachtoffer.
