This app is not as advertised. When I speak it has no idea what I’m saying. I don’t see how the reviews are so wonderful. I had high hopes but don’t waster your time. The help article essentially says it’s glitchy and hallucinates. The entire purpose of this is to have a conversation which is impossible when the AI thinks I am always saying thank you.

For a long time I have been stuck on that ‘intermediate plateau’ – I understand a lot of French but have difficulty speaking.  However,  Langua has been extremely effective in helping me to move forward and actually talk.  It’s so easy to have a stress-free casual conversation without being embarrassed or feeling rushed. In addition, there are many helpful features (such as preparing sessions focused on my weaknesses) that make this app an unusually helpful teaching tool. Over the course of my extensive French-learning journey Lanqua is without question the best app I have ever used.

The only thing I dislike about it is the time it takes to get a response back from the AI. It often takes several seconds to a minute. It will be wonderful when they solve this problem but for now, don’t waste your money.

I used the website but the site itself explicitly states that the app has more features, which is bizarre to me. Who wants to learn a language on their phone? There’s a lot to be desired here. Its buggy and slow, the corrections will often randomly start halfway through the sentences and forget about the first half despite it not being correct, the voice to text feature is horrible at detecting what you said, like it will change “posso” to “also” and then tell you you’re wrong. The structured lessons are extremely limited in scope and basically just pronunciation practice, but with the poor voice to text transcription, they become useless, and since there is no apparent way to use the accents on my pc keyboard, neither speaking nor typing are perfect options. The unstructured content like general conversations are not very helpful either. No matter the difficulty setting, it becomes overwhelming and you end up just translating the whole thing to English. There is no way to get the balance to a manageable level without carefully prompting some kind of structured lesson, which you can just as easily do with ChatGPT for free. Lastly, it talks way too fast and there is no way to ask it to speak slower, it can repeat itself slower, but you can’t set that to the default conversation speed. Overall I’m dissatisfied.

Also on my 15th message I am expected to understand fully a whole sentence in Japanese and reply fully in Japanese.

I’ve been using this for a few days and it’s really well made. On the one hand, you might think, why not just use an LLM and ask it to chat in your target language? I’ve done that a lot too, but the experience here is refined, structured and very thoughtful. There’s too many good bits to cover them all, but suffice it to say that it really feels like you’ve got a language teacher in your pocket at all times. The slang chats are amazing!

One minor issue I have had is that the “auto send after a few seconds of silence” does not reliably work, perhaps due to noise being picked up in the background. I can imagine that’s a tough one to really figure out. In practice, tapping to send (the default mode) works great.

Anyway, if you’re considering this app, just try it! It’s free to start. I can feel my fluency improving already.
