Further customizability would make it 5 stars, easy! -- Hsldlfjzk, 2024-12-19 ### ****- "Great, but with a frustrating flaw" I want to make clear right away that this is a seriously incredible value for money. Having an SRS memorization app for all of the JLPT kanji for a one time purchase is genuinely incredible and I recommend it whole heartedly. The problem I’ve consistently dealt with is the writing of some of the Kanji. I’ve found that once a kanji has more than ~10 strokes, the likelihood of the app interrupting your writing to tell you it’s wrong - even when the stroke order is correct - goes up exponentially. This can be unbelievably frustrating when very easy kanji in N5 or N4 keep cropping up over and over again in your review even though you’ve written them hundreds of times and know them like the back of your hand. A great example of this would be 週. I’ve lived and studied in Japan, I’ve been studying Japanese for more than a decade, and have been comfortably above N5 since about 2016. Yet still, without fail, every time 週 comes up in review, it marks it incorrect. And I know it’s normal to think user error - and I did too at first! I had quite a few bad stroke order habits engrained into me from trying to keep up in school when I moved to Japan and hardly knew the language. This app has been a godsend for reviewing and correcting these old mistakes. 週 is not one such case. I don’t know how else to convey that I am 100% positive, in this instance, it genuinely isn’t on me. There’s a few others where it feels like the sensitivity for error is just way too over tuned, but 週 being N5 definitely feels the worst emotionally to keep being hit with lol. Again, I need to reiterate - this is an incredible app and I do wholeheartedly recommend it to learn and study Kanji! There’s just a couple of errors like this that really pull down the user enjoyment. -- review_app_queen, 2024-12-13 ### ****- "The app is good, but…" The pronunciations are off. I just can’t get behind the ai voicebot saying these. It just doesn’t sound right. It would be nice if some of the kanji, especially in the earlier level, were voiced by someone. For 六, the app makes it sound like its pronounced “loku,” which, to my knowledge, it isn’t. I’m just saying this because it is very confusing to me to have to listen to this ai voice bot. It just isn’t optimal. Learning, by my count, 2139 kanji for $11 makes this app an absolute bargain compared to the mountain of textbooks you’d probably have to buy. While it is worth the price, it’s not perfect by any means. Firstly, after a while the audio pronunciations in the app switch from a male AI voice to a female AI voice, and while they’re both AI the female voice is much lower quality and even gets some of the pronunciations completely wrong. Once you hit N2 or N1 level it’s best to just turn the audio option off; it’s more of a hindrance than anything. In the N2 and especially N1 levels, most of the kanji do not have a handwriting tutorial, instead you just pick them out from 9 options like you would if you were making words or had the writing option turned off. This is simply lazy in my opinion. While I understand a lot of the characters are rare and you probably won’t need to know how to write them very often, I still think the app should offer the option and leave it up to the user to turn the writing tasks off if they desire, instead of not even offering the option. Also, some of the high level characters had differences between the simplified and stylized fonts, and the app doesn’t give you any indication about which one is correct for writing. There are multiple characters (though I’d say less than 10) whose writing tests have blatant stroke order errors, so the app basically teaches/encourages writing them the wrong way. This is an obvious oversight that should be fixed. One obvious example would be the writing test for 畳, which is just wildly incorrect. I reported them as bugs when I saw them but there have been no fixes made that I’ve noticed. Somewhat often, the app picks the most obscure or least helpful definition possible for words or characters, often using a really technical English word instead of more widely-used one. Also some of the definitions are just improperly formatted, such as the definition for 唐 which is written as “Tñang dynasty” instead of “Tang dynasty”. Also some of the definitions are maddeningly similar, such that you get review questions wrong for rather pedantic reasons. For instance, the listed definition for the word 付属 is “attached” while the definition for 所属 is “attached to”, but whenever you get a review question for one, you get the definition for the other as an option, -- LegoChickenGuy, 2024-08-29 ### **--- "Crashes IOS 17.5.1" I don’t know why but it keeps crashing when I try to open the app. I even restarted my phone. Here are 3: 1. Somewhere in the N3 level the normal human and native Japanese sounding voice was replaced by a robotic voice. Its pronounces things like “りょ” as “りよ” and doesn’t use any pitch accent. Please find a better 3rd party to use for audio 2. I’ve learned a LOT of vocabulary from this app but it is difficult to find specific vocab to review. Please consider adding in a vocabulary bank that we can review/quiz ourselves on 3. There are quite a few kanji that use the least used meaning of that kanji.
