Ling Reviews

Not any lessons for fluent reviewing

I am a native Albanian speaker, I downloaded this app to review some of my grammar and vocab as I live in an english speaking country and have all my life. There is no option to change the course to a more expert level without paying a tremendous amount of money with no option of a free trial to see what I’m getting into.

Rare languages, some great features, but not ideal for beginners & some bugs

I’m a high A1/low A2 learner of Burmese who’s been studying using a variety of resources for a few years now. It’s hard to find an app that teaches Burmese, so I was pleasantly surprised to find one that does. I appreciate the dialogues, and the ability to turn transliterations and translations on and off. However, I don’t think the app would be ideal for beginners as the app never really requires you to learn 1:1 word correspondence. It teaches you the phrases “He sleeps” and “I go shopping” and never changes it up to “He goes shopping.” I’ve also done 12 lessons and found at least 4-6 errors in the app so far (no choices, audio not matching text, and possibly a misspelled word, though the last one could be my error). Still, even if the word for “go” changes spelling when used in sentences, it would be useful to have a note about this in the app. I also suspect that the app may be teaching how to speak written Burmese which differs from spoken Burmese, though I’m not proficient enough to know this for sure. It’s nice to have an organized app for Burmese learning, but I haven’t decided if the good outweighs the bad enough to continue after the free trial period yet.

I’m using this app to learn Albanian and Bosnian. I would emphasize that you won’t become fluent just through using the app, and learning the language comes down to your own motivation and use of other resources too. This is by no means a criticism of this particular app, as I feel that apps like Duolingo also will not make you fluent. However, I feel that the app is easy to use and is providing good information and a great starting point to guide my learning further. It doesn’t teach you every single word, but it gives you some important basic ones for each lesson. As I use it more I am beginning to understand some of the grammar rules by doing the conversation exercises and am picking up on certain nuances in the languages. Overall I think this is a great app to use as a starting point. You will need to incorporate other resources if you truly want to become fluent, but it has been very helpful in guiding me. Other things I have added alongside the app include watching videos of native speakers and chatting with AI in Albanian to have real-world conversations in lieu of knowing people who speak Albanian. Don’t expect to become fluent using just one medium, but the app has only been beneficial for me.

Amazing app!

This app is amazing for learning Asian languages that you usually can’t find on other learning apps (like Duolingo). right now I am learning Tagalog and I am learning new phrases each day.

Audio sometimes does NOT match text.

Alexandro@&& on

The audio sometimes does NOT match the text and the mismatch is difficult to report.

The quality has gone downhill

andosguy on

United States

Update: Unfortunately the quality has gone significantly downhill. The audio doesn’t match the text. Separate words are incorrectly joined. Sometimes there is no correct answer and you just have to guess. They also use different transliteration methods throughout making it hard to learn. Not to mention they don’t teach you important basics that get you in trouble. My Aunt even yelled at me for being rude because I used the wrong word! 5 stars for version 3. Version 4 not so great. I even erased my phone and restored it in order to go back to version 3. If you’re lucky enough to get version 3 I can’t recommend it enough. It’s both a fun and really effective way to learn another language. I’ve always been horrible at foreign languages but with Ling version 3 I’m blown away by how much I can speak in just 2 months. And it’s fun! Features in version 3 NOT IN VERSION 4: - Review all the words you’ve learned so far - Review the words you learned in the lesson you just completed - Report an error in a lesson. It was really easy and they’d usually get back to you within a day or two. Version 4 does not have this and upon getting version 4 the lesson broke and it was impossible to make it farther than half way through the lesson. So I actually needed to report the error which I can only do in version 3. Both versions have the fun and interactive lessons which are great. However to really make it stick I’ve found reviewing vocabulary every couple days is key. Unfortunately in version 4 you can’t do this anymore. The only way to see what you’ve learned would be repeating every lesson over again. In version 3 however you could review all the vocabulary by just swiping which is 20 times faster. I hope the developers will go back to version 3 or at least bring back all the features they had. It really was a great app!
