its not bad, but so many issues, especially when using on iMac
I use Luma for many years as I cannot afford premier pro or finalcut pro. there are many issues and since swithing to iMac from iPad even more issues appear and whenever I reach out for help I get ignored… lagging, freezing, and not reacting to the clicks at all until it’s closed and reopened, it gets very frustrating. Invest in better software which is what I am doing now…
Problems
This has been an amazing app until now nothing but problems. Now always showing player error
FIX NOW THIS APP WAS NOT CHEAP. Videos won’t load can not find or load audio or video. Not good for a premium app fix it. I paid for an app which for many of years has been great until now it’s useless now
IT DOES NOT WORK
It DOES NOT WORK!!!
I just PAID for all the upgrades (THE WHOLE PACKAGE) and the app just can not handle it man! It crashes, every 2 minutes!
Sound Isolation DOES A KINDA DECENT JOB but as soon as it is used, it silences some of the clips in the timeline!
This is so sad!
You guys make all these extravagant upgrades but the app is not ready for it!
Do yourself a favour and get colour grading/ correction right before you do anymore fancy upgrades.
I’m so sick and tired of LumaFusion crashing and the fact that I have to render in 3K instead of 4K (which I film in) because LumaFusion keeps crashing!
I honestly can’t do it anymore.
Please say something
Great for IPAD
Started off with DAVINCI and that was Hell to use on the iPad. This was recommended and so far, it works very well with the iPad with a good user interface.
Once you get around shortcuts, editing basic videos is pretty smooth. Would like there to be faster and easier ways to arrange videos, pictures, audio and so forth, as you have to do a few clicks to get things done. So while not perfect, so far, it’s functional and far more user friendly than DAVINCI.
One issue I have is the lack of being able to export only a portion of a project. A range tool like on Final Cut Pro would be really helpful.
Just some cleaning up on making it easier to move stuff around on the timeline.
Hopefully things don’t start crashing now…
Was great until update
Seems a recent update has broken the app completely. Add a file to timeline and it disappears after a few seconds. Unusable on Macbook Pro M3 Pro
Used to be great!
Used to be great and my go to, but in the last 2 years it’s become a buggy mess. And despite numerous updates those bugs persist whilst the Dev’s focus on features they can charge us for. It’s still the best on older machines but if you can run them there are better options. So I’ll be off…
Big bug … Broken rendering of movies
This last update is terrible under 18.2… 4 seconds time to render 1 second of movie on ipad pro m1 chip, errors with player when external editing on ssd is enabled. Doesn’t finish rendering a video of 21 mins in one hour and gives errors. Previous release was working fine. Either ipados 18.2 or this release broke this badly. It is not usable any longer. This is not the first time that new versions brakes rendering, but it could be iPadOS 18
Fantastic video editor for iPad
I did something recently that I have never done before - I went on a 6 week trip abroad leaving my MacBook Pro at home to save weight (back issues) and brought my newly purchased M4 iPad Pro instead. As a Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve user on my computer, the iPad equivalent apps were my natural first choice apps on the iPad.
So why am I reviewing Luma Fusion? Well I found DaVinci Resolve for iPad very disappointing. It is a fantastic app for colour grading but it seems to have been ported wholesale to iPad with little thought for iPad-specific features. In fact it is almost unusable without a keyboard which defeats the purpose of using an iPad in the first place. Even some of the more advanced colour grading features, such as curves, are nearly impossible to use without an Apple Pencil or a mouse. And there is zero documentation it seems. For anyone not familiar with the computer version, it would be effectively unusable. It is simply not designed for iPad.
Final Cut Pro is newish on iPad and well-designed and well-documented as one would expect for an app direct from Apple but it is still new and is missing some important features (e.g. stabilisation). In addition it is subscription only, breaking the long tradition of Final Cut Pro for Mac.
So when I was travelling,I decided to look around and I came across Luma Fusion which I’d heard about before but never used, mainly because I’d never edited video before on an iPad. Anyway long story short: I love this app. It does most of what I need on an iPad on the move and it even runs on my M1 MacBook Pro.
It is really well-designed for iPad, it runs perfectly on my device, it is very intuitive and it has excellent written documentation, not to mention the YouTube channel. Caroline Scott’s tutorials deserve a special mention - simply excellent.
A feature I love which I’ve not seen mentioned anywhere is the ability to output HDMI to an external screen which gives a full screen view and is very useful in assessing video quality.
All in all a fantastic app - thanks.
Glitchy glitchy, crashy crashy… RIP Luma Fusion
This used to be a 5-star review. (I will leave the old review below to compare)
But, this is the end for me and Luma Fusion. Since the recent updates, it has crashed constantly. I lose sound unexpectedly and repeatedly. Multicam studio which I paid an extra £20 - is unusable now. (Today the sound either got lost, or weirdly, started playing speeded up?!)
Every update promises to fix bugs - but new ones appear instead.
Anyway, this WAS a great, solid and reliable editing tool. Used professionally. Now it is a liability. Such a shame.
Fuma fusion support - look at your most recent reviews. They are all diabolical.
Where to go from here? Black Magic- Da Vinci Resolve or Capcut?
OLD REVIEW BELOW (5 Stars)
Felt like I needed to say thank you to the Luma Fusion team.
I’m a professional video journalist. I use Luma Fusion when I’m on the road and or need to edit from home. And honestly, it’s just brilliant. I’ve now been using it for almost 2 years and it’s hard to fault. Fast. Intuitive. Powerful… It has never, ever, crashed!
At work, we use a combination of Avid and Adobe Premier. But I wish I could always edit on Luma Fusion. (To be honest, editing on an iPad also helps. The touch screen and portability are unique - I use an iPad Pro 2020)
But the app itself is a constant joy to use. It has never failed me. I happily use it to broadcast to millions on a UK television network. Thanks, Luma Fusion!

Crashes with external SSD
There are times when scrolling the main timeline with LUTs applies that the whole app will crash and force close. The SSD then isn't recognised by the files app and then I have to reboot the iPad to get it to register and show up working again. Not great. It happens less than 5 mins into each usage of the app.
