There should be a dedicated search app
I don’t care about tournaments. If that’s why you’re getting it, fine. I play at a kitchen table with friends and nowhere else. The card search is garbage and the Gatherer mobile site constantly freezes my screen with a poorly implemented link to the app that can’t be used if you’re not at the top of the page still. The search in this app has no way to see the back of flip cards, the search itself is hit or miss if it actually finds the cards you search for, and will often push you back to the very first card in what could be a list of thousands. If this were a card game with 100-200 cards this would be acceptable. It is a card game where you can make dozens of piles of that many unique cards without overlapping at all. It’s utter garbage.
TRASH APP AND HERE’S WHY
You can’t see previous history of tournaments you played in. This app was created by 5 year olds on a shoestring budget. My lcs uses paper instead because this app is the least intuitive piece of trash on the market
Ads in Push Notifications
Not only is it woefully inadequate in regards to doing it’s main function (tournament streamlining) it also randomly pushes ads as popups when not running.
Really needs a UX Designer on the team.
Useful, but needs ability to show reverse of flip cards
Giving this a 2. It’s useful but with issue of not showing other side of flip cards is just a hindrance. If it did I’d give it either a 4 or a 5. But till then…
One point of fault
This app is mainly used for the counter, to help track life amounts during games, and the card database.
The card database is truly helpful often by teaching how a card really works in the lower section called “Rulings”. However, these Rulings are always printed at least twice! It’s just honestly uncomfortable when the text begins its repeat.
The rulings make the game tons more enjoyable bc they allow cards to be correctly played. Often, a hidden, to me, feature of a card will surface while reading the rulings! That’s quite fun! But, at the same time, small frustration also surfaces each time I discover that I’m wasting time reading the repeated text.
So, it seems wise to memorize the first ruling, and then purposely quit reading once the memorized text repeats. That is doable and also troubling.
Wizards, please remove all the repeats of rulings. Thank you.
It’s pretty neat
I’ve used it a few times and it worked well. You can look at the various cards, see what sets they were released in, read the flavor text, and search by various qualifiers, but the coolest part is the list of local events near you. If you go to a local shop’s FNM event, you enter a code and automatically pop up in the store’s system so you get credit for attending local events along with Arena rewards, I believe (though I haven’t confirmed that). At any rate, it’s a fine app with additional features like a life counter for you to keep track of your games/matches.
Expect problems
On Android it wouldn’t complete the Join function. Now on iPhone it doesn’t show my opponent’s name (or my name for that matter) so I don’t know who I’m playing against. Why is WotC software so buggy?
Useful app
Overall the app works great. Easy to use. Especially nice for life counts for commander games etc.
Would love the option to push a button and have the app select a random card for me to look at like the old web page feature from gatherer. Found many a good card from that function in the past. Would be a great way to kill time while waiting for a bus etc.
So good
This app is everything the Bandai app wishes it was top notch
Great App to stay involved, but minor pain points
A great multifunction app that keeps you connected to the Magic scene. Stays up to date with new cards, offers search functionality, shows local upcoming events, and helps run said events. Pain points include the search functionality not being 100% accurate based on search terms, and/or what the different filters do not being completely clear in some cases, and you are unable to close the app during a tournament or it ejects you. There was a bug I noticed too when I tried to use the life point tracker in a match and had to force close due a UI problem, and did not understand the specifics on the backend to explain. It was also a while ago.
