Description

Little is still known of the distribution and population trends of most mammals in the UK. This free app can be used to help address this problem.

To make recording mammals simpler this new app version brings together both Mammal Mapper and Mammal Tracker.

Mammal Mapper v2 allows you to record sightings as part of a survey and ad hoc sightings. When running a survey the app records your route and its duration along with the number and location of animals seen. The app also allows you to collect other valuable information such as how far away and where the animal was in relation to your position. It also allows you to upload images of your sightings, where these are possible. Surveys are much more valuable than isolated records since they allow the absence of species and animal densities to be inferred.

Ad hoc sightings can be added whenever you don't have the time to do a survey or when you come across something you wish to record quickly.

All terrestrial mammals (now including bats as a general group) can be recorded.

Can’t update the old app as revised one needs my mobile (iPhone 6) to have iOS13.

Rediculous privacy policy

The GrizedaleGang on

I have downloaded this app twice but deleted it on both occasions due to a privacy policy that REQUIRES me to allow all my data to be shared with anyone. Some of it is to be shared “permanently” which I thought was against the law. I’m not doing that. More than happy to help spot mammals but this is simply unacceptable.

Mammal Mapper

The App would be improved if it automatically sorted the mammal choices based on the most frequently seen to date. It would save time having to scroll down for frequently seem mammals. The I have now downloaded the app 3 times and each time after working for a couple of walks, it has frozen and become inaccessible on my i-phone so have had to give up trying to use it.

Excellent!

Great app and really easy to use too. Now even my walks where I don’t see anything can be useful for science!

Some drawbacks.....

Lettys Spraye on

This app requires location to be “always on”. So it will be a battery-draining app on the iPhone, not withstanding privacy concerns you may have about this. Also, at present the app is not designed for static use, it’s only for use when you are out for a walk or a cycle ride etc. If you see a red deer in your garden, this app isn’t suitable to record it. The app developers have another app you can use for this. It would be helpful if the info in the App Store could include these points.

Constant location is a step too far

bioseb on

Only became clear after downloading that this app demands constant location info - Sorry, but I’m not prepared to do that. A shame for the mammals. It’s perfectly possible to offer a ‘location access whilst using app’ option. - why not? Will now delete.

Really looking forward to using it. Won’t work!!!

Good but could do with improvement

Thepenguinegg on

I would really like to be able to go back to a past day and record as I don’t have data only WiFi which can’t be used on walks but I know The location of deer, badgers, foxes and mice and want to log them. So problem is I can’t use the app to record as it needs data. Otherwise it’s good and very informative

Maps doesn’t work

Bemo234 on

The map doesn’t load and just shows a grey screen.
