## Microwave 1 Description
Waldorf's famous Microwave 1 synthesiser faithfully emulated in an iPad app including an AUv3 extension.

35 years ago Waldorf Music released its first instrument, the Microwave, which took the hearts of the leading musicians and producers of the nineties by storm. Its vibrate and distinctive sound transported the early wavetable sounds of the eighties into the rising electronic dance music of the following decade. Massive base lines, enigmatic wavetable modulations, brutal attacks and pads smooth like silk have been inspired generations of musicians. Microwave’s unique interpretation of wavetable synthesis combined with analogue filters defined what hybrid synthesis is at its best.

Now’s the time to bring back this magical instrument in a software form into the hands of producers and musicians world-wide. The Waldorf Microwave 1 app was painstakingly recreated from the original hardware with all its idiosyncrasies and wonderful singularities.

A multi-year effort and a labor of love which analyzed and modeled the original instruments down to the finest sonic details of every aspect of the hardware. Only the first generation of the Microwave and also the Waldorf Wave were based on a custom developed integrated circuit called the Waldorf ASIC. In combination with the legendary Curtis filter chips and a very unique 68k CPU based controller software the ASIC defined a very special flavor of wavetable sound unparalleled to none. No one else than the inventor of Wavetable Synthesis of the eighties, Wolfgang Palm, helped to design this unique chip. Waldorf took a huge effort to analyze and recreate this integrated circuit within the app. As the original, the app runs the internal synthesis with the ultra high sampling rate of 250 kHz regardless of the iPad's sampling rate. The recreated digital waveforms have been bit-by-bit compared with the original to be 100% identical.

Digital Section (ASIC)

- Internally running with 250 kHz sampling rate to match original ASIC sampling rate.
- Modeling of digital-to-analog converters for each voice (DAC).
- Two oscillators based on same wavetable per multi instrument.
- Unique digital noise generator based on ASIC technology.
- Digital mixer of oscillators and noise based on original ASIC including overflow bug.
- Faithful recreation of non-interpolated pitch generation.

Wavetables

- All original wavetables of Microwave 1 based on the original coding and bit-identical to original.
- Including algorithmic and speech wavetables.
- Faithful recreation of 8-bit quantization and aliasing.
- Easy to use wavetable editor based on internal control tables.
- Full waveform catalogue of original instrument can be accessed.
- User waveform editor.

Filter

- Faithful modeling of revision A and B analogue filters.
- Voice individual calibration of cutoff and resonance to model detuned hardware.
- Cutoff and resonance modulations.
- Frequency response graphic animated by live modulations

Amplifier

- Modeling of voltage controlled analogue amplifiers and panning section.
- Faithful recreation of control voltage DACs including stepping effects.

## Microwave 1 Reviews in United States

### ***** "I love Waldorf Synths"
Microwave1 is an excellent representation of the hardware at a reasonable price.

Microwave1 is a great sounding app. The diversity of timbres are highly useful while, when pushed can be exotic sounding. Wavetable synthesis has flexibility traditional oscillators simply can’t accomplish. In many ways the Microwave1 reminds me of their hardware Microwave and Q.

The sonic flexibility is amazing and worth whatever it sells for.

Highly recommended.

### ***** "WOOLY BULLY rolf the wolf's best yet MAMMOTH JAMMETH"
Skeuomorphicisism defined by that beautiful KNOB, and the amazing WaVE TABLES that somehow, are redefining the cutting edge in back to the Futuristic low end theory the Doc would sure love, with invisible internals exposed, idiot proof modulation patching, i want to like to try this sweater on ...and destroy Marty's rig like its '88 🔈🔊🔈🔉🔈🔊💨🌬️🔥1/4 inch jacks so yeah dont pull my string and walk away 😂although these beautiful articulated envelopes will be harmoniously singing 🎵 when you return...although having another I/0 is exclusively for logic fanboys like you guys i am excited to attempt to run this pristine emulation through AUM with all my goodies, now Waldorf please give us Nave + Attack + Microwave the whole thing together add thenglue in NS2 🤔thats some heavier mettle (especially when i start hitting modulation targets effortlessly with my micto microfreak wave setup 🤔 wows
and whoilã so please actually
we can make them AUV3 together with mad scientist rolf back theře cheffin WOW 🤯 lil C plus you know 😉 Awesome job Waldorf a story in a synth this is up there with Dagger for me in Awesome playability plus the razor sharp polyforce is simple fenius with the red light 🚦 perfectly executed 🥂

### ***** "Sounds like the hardware synth…"
…because it is the reconstructed soul of the original, which is amazing to me.😁 It even has that inexplicable warmth that the Microwave had despite being digital. if you know, you know.

Some patches, like White Shadow and Let it grow, almost sound like an analog synth, which makes no sense but it’s true. They have that almost tangible aural texture and feel. Journey to Wave is gonna make me cry. With a fancy reverb like my Eventide H90, it sounds even more amazing.😭

For less than $20, it’s a no-brainer. Don’t think about it and just get it. I deafly bought it without even listening to it, and was so pleased when I heard the first factory patch. Not gonna ruin the little surprises, but the UI has a couple ones to be discovered.😀

Waldorf, THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS SYNTH BACK, and even better, to the portable realm. ❤️ Dream come true for me and many other lovers of your old hardware synths that defined our upbringing.

PS: Please do not abandon it like you tend to do with your releases.

### ***** "Good to see Waldorf back!"
Another wonderful synth app from Waldorf after so many years. Sounds really good and a wonderful addition to my soft synth collection. Great to see you back, Waldorf!
-- TheRealDutchee, 2024-11-20

### ***-- "Patch Browser Bug"
Nice instrument, but the patch browser is buggy when using more than one instance in a DAW. The layout doesn’t fit the screen in a DAW, so you have scroll using one red dot overlay. It would be easier to rid of that and make a two finger scroll or something. Sounds are great, but the browser is a bunch of random unorganized patches. Someone should organize them into categories.
-- Zermosa, 2024-11-18

### ***** "Incredible"
Not only does this synth sound incredibly good, whoever designed the UI deserves an award. Everything is so straightforward and laid out so well it’s very easy to just pick up and use. Tons of presets included sound great and are extremely easy to tweak thanks to how well thought out and placed the controls are. Don’t sleep on this one if you’re in the market for iOS synths!

### ***** "Really cool!"
This synth is different enough and sounds great! Get it!
