The support is great and its made language learning so much easier. The app here on the phone is simple and easy to use. The free trial period was a weird amount of time not 7 days and not 14 days but 10 days? It’s day two now and app is still busted. It’s a massive app that takes up a lot of space and I can’t open it. When I click the app the screen goes orange then black and crashes back to my phones main screen. So you have to rely 100% on the Japanese (in this case) recording to try to learn how to say a word, with no visual reference. For example a simple phrase like Daijoubu desu, you are only given this: 大丈夫です and a recording. Most people do the majority of their learning through sight, with a much smaller portion being sound. I have to take the Japanese characters and put them in to Google Translate to see what they actually are in English so I can pronounce them correctly. -- telafonic, 2025-05-23 ### *---- "Huh?" As someone who’s tried to study Japanese on and off (emphasis on the “off” lol) for 15 years, I’m so glad Migaku exists and that I decided to take a chance on it. It’s the best language app I’ve tried yet, and not only are the lessons good (it’s got some of the best grammar explanations I’ve seen so far, while still being simple), but it also makes it easy to sentence-mine through the Chrome extension. Anki was always too overwhelming for me, but Migaku is really easy to understand, and I don’t dread opening the app every day. I recommend starting with the trial to see how you like it before you purchase, since we’re all different when it comes to learning. Migaku isn’t perfect (no language app is), but it’s helping me so much. If I’m gonna be watching J-dramas anyway, might as well learn and make some flash cards from them while I’m at it! -- MargaretR0, 2025-05-17 ### ***** "Yoga made it easy" The add on’s on chrome and Anki before 2020 was good but complicated to set up. Migaku does it all for you in a way using AI. The card creation is way better. It links with your browser and shows you words you already learned through the app when reading or watching in your target language. I can’t believe how nice it is. All of the features are well thought out and executed. I’ve tried a ridiculous amount of Japanese learning apps and, at one point, invested a lot of time into Anki. It’s really a wild app. You get: - a nice SRS with some great decks to get started with - a roadmap and some solid videos to explain how to make the most progress - the extension for watching YouTube and Netflix with clickable subtitles - adding your own word cards is insanely easy. Add a word and it will generate good example sentences with great sounding audio - the pitch accent trainer - a special app for teaching kanji - basically one-click sentence mining from videos What I love is that this is targeted towards serious language learners, but the app has the great UX of a fancy mainstream app. I’m grateful for the open source tools that got us this far, but I’m more than happy to pay money to get something that’s a little less rough around the edges and that requires very little knowledge to get up and running with. As someone has been learning Japanese for over 15 years and is now learning Korean and planning to learn Mandarin in the future, having all of the study tools I need in one place to prepare me for making immersion-based flashcards is amazing. The interface is clean and there’s no unnecessary fluff.
