Researchers at Monash University have developed the low FODMAP diet and a corresponding app to assist in the management of gastrointestinal symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Monash University FODMAP diet works by swapping foods high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), with low FODMAP alternatives. Around 75% of people with IBS experience symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.
The app comes directly from the research team at Monash and includes the following:
- General information about the FODMAP diet and IBS.
- Easy to understand tutorials to guide you through the app and the 3-Step FODMAP diet.
- A Food Guide detailing the FODMAP content for hundreds of foods using a simple 'traffic light system'.
- A list of branded products that have been certified by Monash as low FODMAP.
- A collection of over 70 nutritious, low FODMAP recipes.
- Functions that allow you to create your own shopping list and add notes to individual foods
- A Diary that enables you to record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels. The Diary will also guide you through step 2 of the diet - FODMAP reintroduction.
- The ability to adjust units of measurement (metric or imperial) and activate colour blindness assistance.

Monash FODMAP Diet Reviews
Vital for IBS sufferers
The app is really great, except:
- some items show ‘green’ for a really small serve and no indication of the likely hood of issue with a bigger serves, for example seeds which are often only small serves, but with some dishes there can be quite a lot, and with no indication of any fodmaps present it doesn’t help predict suitably of these serves.
-As there is no amounts of fodmaps present info, only green-yellow-red representation, you can’t get a picture of accumulation of the individual fodmaps across mixed food meals.
-And I haven’t found a linear correlation between green-yellow-red volumes of the fodmaps also making it hard to estimate accumulation of the fodmaps in mixed food dishes. Some foods show a high volume as green with little variation between the three colours, others have a small amount as green and a high volume variation. I have a theory there maybe a linear correlation for specific fodmaps and the variations I am seeing are wider over different fodmaps.
-and for an app providing info from the leading research institution for this issue, being an Australian university, there is a lot less Australian pre-made products than I would hope for. There is globally spread pre-made products, but so many things are not there.
- I would LOVE to know an approximate mass value for each colour for each FODMAP!!!!! For example of why, My sensitivity for lactose is much worse than the green light, and I think having a measurement would help me gauge my sensitivity and food options so much better.
Thank you Monash uni!
Not helpful
My GP recommended this app. Honestly I do no find it one bit helpful. The food advice is often conflicting or extremely convoluted (example: can eat this 5g of this fruit if ripe, if not ripe eat as much as you like). It appears to be sponsored by food companies and of course all those foods get positive ratings. It is a pretty expensive app for the little amount of information it contains
A life changer
The Monash FODMAP diet app is an invaluable tool for navigating IBS and intolerances. It’s so easy and has been a life changer for me, I no longer feel I’m stumbling in the dark. The app has made food choices simple and I feel WELL!
Overcharged and not worth the money
For an app that costs $13 I would expect it to have more information and be able to be more personalised. It’s also meant to be a once of payment but in the last month that have taken the cost of the app out 8 times!!
Shopping List
I’ve just purchased this app and it’s a bit disappointing that the shopping list isn’t integrated with the recipes. I suppose the thinking was that I would print the recipe I’m interested in and then make my shopping list??
Hopefully this improvement is on the todo list.
Monash Fodmap App
This App is easy to use when eating out or shopping. It is a guide to portion sizes.
Fantastic resource to manage low fodmap
Wonderful app and resource to help manage low fodmap dietary requirements. Plus the diary is so handy to record symptoms and food. Recipes are a wonderful addition.
It should be called FodApp!!
They call the app FodApp
Ok app
This app is ok, but quite limited in what brands it seems to cover. For instance you can’t type in a specific brand name, and the brands it does have don’t seem to be readily available at Coles/Woolies. I was expecting something a lot more user friendly for the price point.
Disappointing
I was so excited to find something to help me on my new fodmap diet journey only to be way overcharged as opposed to the $12.99 it was displayed as. Can someone contact me for a refund please I would never have purchased the app if I knew I’d be charged $32.48 for it!!!
