Description

The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is an English translation of the Bible by the Lockman Foundation. The New Testament was first published in 1963, and the complete Bible in 1971. The most recent edition of the NASB text was published in 1995.

The NASB was published in the following stages:

Gospel of John (1960)
The Gospels (1962)
New Testament (1963)
Psalms (1968)
Complete Bible, Old and New Testaments (1971)
Modified Editions (1972, 1973, 1975, 1977)
Updated Edition (1995)
In parallel with the Bible itself, the NAS Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible was published in August 1997.For convenience, this concordance uses the same word numbering system as Strong's Concordance.

Translation philosophy
The New American Standard Bible is considered by some sources as the most literally translated of major 20th-century English Bible translations. According to the NASB's preface, the translators had a "Fourfold Aim" in this work:

These publications shall be true to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.
They shall be grammatically correct.
They shall be understandable.
They shall give the Lord Jesus Christ His proper place, the place which the Word gives Him; therefore, no work will ever be personalized.
The NASB is an original translation from the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts, based on the same principles of translation, and wording, as the American Standard Version (ASV) of 1901. It offers an alternative to the Revised Standard Version (1946–1952/1971), which is considered by some to be theologically liberal, and also to the 1929 revision of the ASV.

The Hebrew text used for this translation was the third edition of Rudolf Kittel's Biblia Hebraica as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia was consulted for the 1995 revision. For Greek, Eberhard Nestle's Novum Testamentum Graece was used; the 23rd edition in the 1971 original, and the 26th in the 1995 revision.

Seeing the need for a literal, modern translation of the English Bible, the translators sought to produce a contemporary English Bible while maintaining a word-for-word translation style. In cases where word-for-word literalness was determined to be unacceptable for modern readers, changes were made in the direction of more current idioms. In some such instances, the more literal renderings were indicated in footnotes.

The greatest strength of the NASB is its reliability and fidelity to the original languages. Additionally, the NASB includes printing of verses as individual units (although more recent editions are available in paragraph format.)

Love this app.

Great for my needs.

The exact version and app format that I was looking to purchase!

Not all features usable

I love having this Bible app on my iPhone so I can read at any time and anywhere. I wish all the features would work. It won’t let me mark off books or chapters as I complete them and I find this very annoying. It does let me choose a chapter in a book but gives me no way of keeping track although there is a button to mark completed. I wish the developer would correct this.

Lose the advertising.

Ads pop up in the middle of a quiet time. Enough said. Offer a pay option without ads.

It appears it’s cleverly designed to discourage BIble reading. It’s a very frustrating icon to navigate. I cannot recommend this to ANYONE who takes Bible reading seriously.

Text only no references no search capability

Text separated by verse numbers but not searchable. Text includes topic headings as part of the text and is not bold or separate from the verses. Also the app does not show links to similar verses or threads. Basically you get one long text file separated by book chapter and verse. Also don’t like switching to another book or chapter, you have to pick from a scrolling list, it is slow and cumbersome. Still looking for an app with these handy features.

Ads keep popping in.

Ads keep popping in and I am not sure what part of the screen I am accidentally touching, if that is indeed the cause, that is making that happen. Advertising at me incessantly is not going to get me to by anything.

Not Worth It

Gateway Bible is free and no ads, so I’ll have to pass. I use the Bible with meeting with clients and the ads are a disruption.
