Although NetNewsWire is currently my preferred RSS reader, I take major issue with the lack of manual control of feed updates. In order to control when it updates, I’ve disable background refresh and keep cell data turned off for this app, except for when I ACTUALLY WANT the app to update.

To fix this anti-feature, they simply need to provide a manual option that never updates feeds unless explicitly commanded to do so. When this issue is resolved, I’ll change my review to a much more positive one and give 5 stars.

I chose this app primarily due to it requiring next to no permissions to run and no requirement to sign up to an external service.

Everything about the program is great but it is shocking how even on the fastest Internet connections, NetNewsWire retrieves article headers so slowly that you would think you’re running on a 2400 baud modem. Once they’re loaded though, everything is fine.

If you’re looking for a free, no-nonsense, and reliable RSS iOS app, this is the one. 

One suggestion to the developers, and if there is a way to do this let me know, allow users to disable updates to certain feeds. At the moment I have to remove feeds to no longer receive updates but I may want to re-enable the feed in the future. Keeping a deleted feed link in a notes app is not ideal.
