Complicated licensing
Why do almost all sat Nav apps have such complex licensing? I have no idea which bits to buy, what the cost will be, so I won’t bother.

As a lover of maps and mapping I always try out various apps to see what features are out there BUT at the end of each day I always return to OsmAnd+ and have done for many many years 👍
The directions feature just doesn’t work. I can’t use it to find my work or home addresses.
I just need to play with it more . Not just use it in a hurry when I’m in the car with CARPLAY… I have to think like the app.
I love the look of the maps (very easy on the eyes), and has some great features that i love. However, I have some issues. I often sync the changes in favourites between my phones, and find that every so often, I get duplicates. Not too bad, except it crashes when I try to remove them. I now have so many duplicates, some places are even duplicated 20 times. Another problem is when you try to navigate from one location to another, but you are not at either. It will navigate from where you are even if you change the points. I also experience crashes when I try to add new places and add information at the same time. I have to add the place, save it, and then edit it to add the details. Otherwise, it’s a great app. Please fix these annoying bugs, and I won’t need to use any other offline maps.
This app does not work properly, does not show up speed in towns and city areas have sent request after request to show how to bring up speeds on map as they have said it will do they just tell me to look at instructions, if you follow instructions still will not work. Also asked to tell me why widget features don’t show up on screen, got told they have not upgrade program. This app was supposed to be capable of working on CarPlay it is not.
When navigating with the app or carplay it will not center your location. It keeps it stuck to the side. Usually obscured by the next turn prompt.
I use this on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and pay the subscription. I use it to navigate off-road (dirt bike) outside of mobile areas. It works very well and the detail of the maps is pretty amazing where I am which is Western Australia. It allows me to venture way further and into much thicker bush than if I was just winging it. My friends also have it so we have 2 or 3 devices going for backup. I have started plotting tracks before rides now and it can be confusing. The app is quite technical so you need to practice to use it effectively but I am getting the hang of it and it is awesome. Not perfect but it amazes me how good it is and it keeps getting better. I have downloaded others to compare and found OsmAnd to be the best.
The menu needs to remember the last page it was on - it’s very hard to navigate - any tap of the map makes the menu reset to the side bar. eg.You could be many levels deep in the menu, want to simply try a different option (from the same page), but any tap outside of the menu to look at the map makes the menu reset to the side bar, thus losing your place in the menu. This happens every time. POI Overlay is on by default when the app opens.
The interface is ugly, confusing, illogical and difficult to use; but I suppose it does what it’s supposed to, once you get your head around it. As for the maps themselves, well that almost exclusively depends on where you live... Some areas (much of Europe, for example) are going to have fantastic coverage and map detail; whilst other areas (most of Australia, for example) are going to have average or below-average coverage and map detail. This is because OsmAnd relies on the OpenStreetMap project, which is created and maintained by the (volunteer) Community... So it’s not OsmAnd’s fault that the quality varies, and I have not taken any “stars” off my review for this very reason. What I do take “stars” off my review, is for the Apple CarPlay support... It’s absolutely garbage! When using OsmAnd via CarPlay, the application (on the vehicle head unit) is unresponsive and / or it doesn’t work at all (just displays a blank screen on the vehicle head unit) and / or works fine for a few minutes, only to stop working... I’m not even kidding, the CarPlay support is that bad, it wouldn’t even be considered “alpha” quality! If you’re primarily using OsmAnd on your smartphone and / or tablet, it will probably meet your needs, especially if there is strong support for the OpenStreetMap project in your area... But if like me, you primarily intend to use OsmAnd via CarPlay, look at something else - anything else - because the current experience is so bad the application is completely unusable. I want to rate OsmAnd more “stars”, I really do... But the simple fact is, CarPlay is an awfully important part of a navigation solution these days and with OsmAnd’s CarPlay support at the standard it currently is, well I’d just be lying if I said I could justify anymore “stars” in my review. Hopefully in the future, these issues will have been addressed and I can update my review accordingly.
